Generation No. 1

1.  PERNEL HENRY1 BAKER was born December 24, 1765 in Sussex County, Delaware, and died December 27, 1837 in Pickway County, Ohio.  He married SARAH/SALLY SMITH Abt. 1788 in Most Likely Sussex County, Delaware, daughter of THOMAS SMITH and RACHEL.

Notes for PERNEL HENRY BAKER:
     According to the 1820 Ohio Census, Pickaway County, Monrow Twsp., Purnell and his wife were both over the age of 45.  In the same household were 5 additional males.  One: 0-10, two: 11-16, two: 19-26.  Seven additional females were listed.  Three: 0-10, one: 11-16, and three: 19-26.
     Ohio Census, 1830, Pickway County, Perry Twsp..  Ten years later, there are two male children under 5, one female 10-15, two females under 20, one male 20-30, one female 30-40, one male 40-40- and one female 50-60.  This means that two additional children were born in the ten years, making a total of accountable children of 14.
     There was no mention whatsoever of a Purnal (1820), Pernal H. (1830) or Purnall H. (1850), in the 1840 census.  I believe that the Purnell senior died by the 1840 census, or he and his family moved out of the state.  The Purnell who is listed in the 1850 Ohio Census, Pickway County, Monroe Twsp., was only 28 years of age, making his birth about 1822.
     The discrepancies of the spellings of the township, and the Christian name, are taken right from the census records.  They are not my mistakes.
     I did find in the 1840, Ohio Census, Pickaway County, listings for Jacob, George W., William, Peter, and Christina Baker as head of their own households.  Are these some of Purnell and Sarah's sons?
     After giving this matter some thought, there might have been three  generations of Purnell's.  For there to have been only two, Sally would have to have been 54 and Purnell 56, when the Purnell of the 1850 listing was born.  It is easy to believe that one of their first born sons was named after his father, and then one of this Purnell's sons was so named.
     I found in Ohio Vital Records #2 a burial of a P. H. Baker, died December 27, 1837, age 68y 3d. This P. H. Baker was buried in Williamsport, Pickaway County, Chiliciothe, Ohio in the Christian Cemetery.  This man would have been born December 24, 1769.  Since the last record of Purnell was in Pickaway County, and no mention of him in the 1840 census, and his son was Purnell H., it is logical to assume that this Purnell was also Purnell H. or P. H. Baker.
     After further research, I found that this Pernal first came to Pickway before 1820, and settled in Williamsport.  The previously mentioned P. H. Baker, must be my Pernal.

     Page 57 .... P. H. Baker was an early settler on the east bank of the stream and planted one of the first orchards in the county.  It was on lands now about the center of Williamsport.  George Reid planted one about the same time.
     Page 58 .... There was a grist mill built at Williamsport, or near the site of it, in 1812, by Pernell Baker.  It stood on the east bank of the creek, about where the Circleville and Washington Pike now crosses the creek. He, soon afterward, built a saw mill near the grist mill.  These mills were destroyed by fire some years later.
     Page 64 .... Pernell Baker built a saw mill on the west side of Deer Creek previous to 1818.  With this mill he sawed the lumber that entered into the construction of the grist mill and distillery that he erected in 1818.

     These only reinforces the fact that Pernal was in Ross County before the 1820 date that was given in the 1892  Portraits & Biographical Records of Fayette, Pickway and Madison Counties, Ohio.
     More reinforcement:  The Ohio 1812 List of Ohio Taxpayers list Purnill Baker, Pickway County.  Pickway County, Ohio 1810 Tax List, Auditor of State ......  Purnell Baker is listed.     Delaware census for 1790 and 1800 list him, the 1810 Ohio census list him.

     There are a number of ways his name has been spelled.  Pernel, Pernal, Purnel, Purnell, Parnel.

Notes for SARAH/SALLY SMITH:
     Sally must have lived in Madison County, Ohio at some time.  I have a contract between her and a Daniel Bruffet, for him to rent "a certain Logg deweling house in the town of Mount Sterling for the term of one year".  The amount to be paid was $24.  It is dated August 24, 1839.  Mount Sterling is in Madison County.  I found in the Ohio Marriages 1789-1850, where an Amanda Freeman, married a William Buffet in Madison County, on December 16, 1843.  Sally's son James, was married to a Charlotte Freeman, so I am assuming that this Amanda is part of Charlotte's family, and the Daniel Buffet is one of Amanda's in laws.
     According to the information from Greenlawn cemetery, on her son's internment card, her name is listed as Sarah.  Although the 1870 Ohio Jackson Twsp. census states the "Sallie is living with her son".  After a lot of research, I have learned that just as men who are called John are also called Jack, women called Sarah were also called Sally or vise versa.
     Another reason why I am assuming her name is Sarah is that her son James named one of his daughters Sarah E. .

     I found information that states that there were six children born of this marriage.  Three sons and three daughters.  I am now trying to find the daughters of their union.  But according to the 1820 Ohio census, there were 5 male children and seven female children, making a total of 12.  The article that stated six, was written in 1892, so I am assuming that six had died by the time of the writing.
     I am still searching for more information on both Sarah (Sally) and the names of the nine other children that were born to her.

     Pickway County Marriage Volume, gives her name as being Polly Davis.              She died at the age of 50.

     The 1850, Fayette County census states that Polly was born in Delaware, but the biological sketch states that they met and married several years after Daniel had settled in Ohio.
     The tombstones on their graves give their dates of death.  I find it interesting that she died exactly two weeks after Daniel died.

4.  JAMES2 BAKER (PERNEL HENRY1) was born October 8, 1809 in Pickway County, Ohio, and died September 7, 1875 in Franklin County, Jackson Twsp, Grove City, Ohio.  He married (1) ELIZABETH SLAUGHTER November 19, 1827 in Fayette County, Ohio, daughter of GEORGE SLAUGHTER.  He married (2) CHARLOTTE FREEMAN July 20, 1851 in Franklin County, Columbus, Ohio, daughter of ABIATHAR[MATHER?] FREEMAN and RHODA WALKER.

Notes for JAMES BAKER:
     From the information I got from the Ohio 1900 census, he was born in Maryland, but according to his death information, he was born in New Jersey.  He was a Farmer according to the same register, and he was 63 years, 11 months and 29 days old at the date of his death.  That should make his birth date September 8, 1812, but family records state otherwise.
     According to the information from Greenlawn cemetery, he was born in Pickway County, Ohio.  He had to have been born in Pickway County, because his father was receiving mail in Pickway County, Circleville in 1808.
     Probate court records don't give him a death date other than having died between 1874-1876, but they do give his place of birth as New Jersey.  It also gives his age at death as 65 y 11 mo 29 days, which is just a couple of days off of the cemetery information. V 4 page 95.
     In 1850, he was living in Madison County, Plesant Twsp.  With him were eight of the ten children that he and Elizabeth had.  She had died four months before the census.

     Jackson Baker, a capitalist and one of the wealthiest as well as most successful farmers of Monroe Township, is a native of Pickway County, descended from its early pioneer stock, and is potent in advancing its interests.  He was born February 21, 1830, into the pioneer home of Daniel and Mary (Davis) Baker, the former a native of Sussex County, Delaware, born in 1800, and the later a native of Ross County, a daughter of one of its earliest settlers.
     The paternal grandfather of our subject, Pernal H. Baker, was a farmer and miller by occupation, and a native of Sussex County, Delaware.  He came to this county in 1820, journeying across mountains and a wild country generally with a team.  He settled in Williamsport, this county, and established himself as a miller, being the pioneer of that industry in this part of the State.  He built a grist mill on Deer Creek, the first one erected on the banks of that stream, and he operated it some years.  He then bought a quarter-section of land in Perry Township, and erected the first gristmill there on Deer Creek, which is now known as Crownover's Mill, and was under his management many years.  He also partly developed his farm, and died in the comfortable home that he had built thereon at a good old age, leaving behind him a golden record as one of our most useful pioneers.  He was a Whig in politics and in religion was of the Methodist faith, a church member.  He and his wife, Sarah Baker, reared three boys and three girls.  The mother lived to be over a hundred and four years old, and was also a devoted Methodist.
     The father of our subject had not attained his majority when he accompanied the family to the new home in the wilderness of this county.  He was married a few years later, and in the course of time became a prosperous farmer, working hard to reclaim his homestead of one hundred and eighty acres and placing the most of it under cultivation.  His farm was just over the line in Fayette County and there he died at the age of fifty-two years, in the midst of a busy career.  He was a worthy member of the Christian Church, interesting himself earnestly in its welfare, and his new wife, who died at the age of fifty years, was likewise a member of that church, being quite strict in her religious views.  He was a Democrat, sound and true, in politics.  The following are the seven children reared by himself and his wife: Sarah, Mrs. Cutright; Elizabeth, Mrs. Nye; Mary, Mrs. Kemp; Jackson; Hester A., Mrs. Chatlin (deceased); Lucinda, Mrs. Chatlin;  and J. Couuts.  The maternal grandfather of our subject was Jesse Davis, a native of Ross County, where he developed a farm of about fifty acres, and there died at the age of seventy-five years, having been the father of five children.
     The subject of this biographical record passed his early life as most other farmer boys, and was educated in the primitive log schoolhouse of pioneer days, which was heated by a rude fireplace. had a clapboard roof, held down by logs, and was furnished with slab benches, a board against the side of the room serving as a writing-desk for the scholars.  He was young when his experience of farm work began, and at the age of twenty-one, he commenced to work out at twenty-five cents a day.  He subsequently obtained possession of a piece of land, comprising sixty-five acres, lying partly in this county and partly in Fayette County, and after his marriage he took his residence thereon.  A few years later, he sold it, and after renting land for a year in Fayette County, bought his present farm in Monroe Township in 1856.  This consists of four hundred and seventeen acres of fine farming land, nearly all under cultivation and in a high state of improvement.  The buildings are of good class, a large frame residence, built in 1878, and a barn, put up in 1868, adorning the place, beside other necessary outbuildings.  Mr. Baker devotes his farm to mixed farming, raising grain and stock.  He raises and fattens many cattle each year, but he has made much of his money by raising hogs.  He has nearly abandoned that of late years, however on account of cholera.  He derives a part of his income from loaning money, and is one of our most extensive capitalists.  He rightly attributes his success to attention to business and to judicious management of his affairs.  He has been School Director, but he never aspires to office, preferring the pleasures and comforts of his own cheerful fireside.  He is a Democrat in his political views, and stands firmly by his party.
     Mr. Baker was wedded in 1853 to Miss Elizabeth Fisher, who was born in Fayette County, September 15, 1835.  She is a woman of great worth, and for over twenty-five years has been a contentious and upright member of the Methodist Church.  Her marriage with our subject has been a true union and has been fruitful of eight children, of whom these five are living; Oren, Rosette (Mrs. McCafferty), John W., Lawson S. and Edward.  The names of those deceased are Austin J., Charles G. and Alva.

     There was a "farm hand" living with Jackson and Elizabeth at the time of the 1860 census. His name was Samuel Davis.  Jackson had an uncle by the name of Samuel Davis, this may have been him.

Notes for CHARLES EDWARD BAKER:
     Charles was in the Navy.  He was a pretty good semi-pro boxer and he was participating in a match while his ship was in the port of Cuba.  He got punched in his abdomen, and was carried back to his ship.  Once out at sea, it was determined that his appendix had ruptured because of the blow, and he died shortly there after from peritonitis.  He was buried at sea.

     Although we have a letter from the Navy stating that he was buried at sea, there is a burial record, and the record states the cause of his death as "pneumonia".

     As I recall the information of their marriage was gotten from a publication of Families of Madison County, and most likely the information was passed down through the family as being the date of marriage that I have.  The County Death Records definitely state that they were not married at the time of the death of the unnamed newborn child.

     According to the 1900 Ohio Census, he was a metal worker for bridges.  I know that in his middle life he was a roofer also.

     According to his application for a marriage license, #19832,  his mother's maiden name was spelled with an "i", Landis instead of an "e", Landes. According to old family papers I have, it was Landes.  His occupation was put down as "Tinner".

     My memories of Grandpa, are all pleasant ones.  He had a beautiful? work shop out behind his house.  It was filled with all these strange wonderful tools and items.  Usually while the "grown ups", would be sitting either at the kitchen table or on the front porch, I was allowed to have free roam in his shop.  One day I found the largest balloon that I had ever seen.  I huffed and puffed until I finally got it blown up, and then proudly took it out to the front porch to "show it off".  Once there, my grandmother's face turned beet red, my mother and father started to laugh, and my grandfather just hung his head down and shook it from side to side.  All of a sudden, my grandmother slapped me and called me a "nasty little girl".  I ran to my father, crying, not understanding what I had done wrong.  He held me and told me that everything would be alright.  It was a long time later, a long time, when I learned what a "rubber" was.
     It was at his house that I learned just how "rich" we were.  WE HAD INDOOR PLUMBING.  Out houses are stinky and nasty in the summer, and COLD in the winter.  I actually had to use the proverbial "catalog pages" to wipe.   On the door, out side of the out house, my grand father had mounted the heads of numerous fish that he had caught.  They were all open mouthed, multi teethed, and terrible looking.  Boy oh boy, did they stink in the summer.
     He loved to work in the yard, and he had the most beautiful roses that I can ever remember seeing, short of being grown in hot houses.  He was a fisherman, and a very jovial man.  I must admit that he wasn't perfect.  I know now, that he was a womanizer, but the question is, did he become a womanizer because of my grandmother's demeanor or was her demeanor the result of his womanizing?
     Once when I was around seven or eight, all of us, grandparents too, went for a picnic at the farm of some old family friends.  Anyway, it had a running stream on it, that was at least 50 feet wide.  I laid down in the very shallow water to rest; when I opened my eyes up, I was way out in the middle of this water.  I saw my mother on the shore line trying to get a fire started, my grandmother was peeling some potatoes, Grandpa was getting his fishing tackle ready to fish, and Daddy was gathering up more fire wood.  I saw Charles running towards mother.  I went under.  The next time I saw light, Mother was standing up and pointing at me,  Grandma had dropped her pan of potatoes, Grandpa was attempting to get to me and Dad was already in the water.  Down I went again.  The next time I saw mother she was screaming and laughing, she was terrified.  Grandma had her hands over her mouth and mumbling, Grandpa was up to his chin in the water and Father was next to me.  Down again.  I awoke to the warm sun shining down on me.  Mother crying with relief, Grandpa was sitting on the shore, holding his side, Grandma was fussing over him, and Charles had picked up the fishing pole.  I was told that the only thing that really saved my life, was that I kept my "mouth shut", and didn't swallow a lot of water.  Although it was Father who pulled me out of the water, It was actually Charles that saved my life.  He was the one who sounder the alarm.   Grandpa was never the same after this.  He had fallen into a deep hole in the stream, and almost drowned himself.
     Grandpa was the one who would "sneak" me some of those wonderful little brown things called "Chocolates".

     It has been very difficult for me to write anything in this area.  I have such mixed emotions when it comes to my grandmother.  Most of my memories aren't pleasant ones.  On her behalf, she was a faithful wife, a very good cook, she loved her God very much, and I have to say that I believe that she believed that what ever she did, she wasn't intentionally trying to hurt anyone.  She had to be a very unhappy woman.  I don't know if she was never really able to show love because she had none to give, or if she couldn't show love, because it made her vulnerable.  When I had asked her children about this, not one of them can ever remember her hugging them, or telling them that she loved them.  She had to be a terribly lonely, unhappy and miserable woman.  I pray that she has found happiness on the other side.
     I think that her name, Eliza, is one of the most beautiful names I've ever heard.

     Of all my aunts, I loved Aunt Pat the most.  I can see now, because she never had any children, that when she did get to spent time with me, she SPOILED me.  She wanted a child very much, in truth, she lost six pregnancies.  After the last one, she had a nervous break down and was never really "normal" again.  Her home was always very bright, and happy.  She raised canary's and they sang their merry songs all day long.  Her second floor was a sewing room, and we spent many long hours up there, just messing around.  From tid- bits of information I was told, Aunt Pat was coerced into marrying Lester.  She was almost "forced" in to it, because Lester was a "good catch".  He was older than her, and by the standards of the day, very comfortable as far as money was concerned.
     When my children were young, Lester, asked me not to bring them around her anymore, because they upset her so much.  By this time she had been in her mental upset for quite some time, and she really loved to have my children around.  As I look back, I realize that it was "him" that was upset, not Aunt Pat.  I don't believe that he ever liked children, and was relieved when Pat lost each pregnancy.  I'm afraid that I allowed Lester to boss me, and for the last ten years of her life, I never saw her.  I didn't go where my children weren't welcome.

     It is very sad to say, but for some reason, we have never been really close with any of my father's family.  I guess that the Uncle I knew most was Uncle Roy.  He reminded me a great deal of my own father, but he had such a deep sense of organized religion that my father never had.  Roy was a deacon in his church, and it was very seldom that I ever saw him with out a smile on his face.  I can't really tell you what he did for a living in his later adult hood, but I know that at one time he was a truck driver for Monarch foods.  He outlived two of his sons.      One I believe was killed in a wreck and if I'm not mistaken the other I'm not sure of.

From the information that I found, she had two children before marrying him. The first one, wasn't his, but the second one was.   According to the marriage license, she was living at 111 South Grubb, the family home, at the time of the application.  Clyde was living at 33 North Skidmore Street.  (Both of the addresses were in Montgomery Twsp, Columbus Ohio.)

Notes for CLARK WENDELL BAKER:
    My father was one of those people, that you either loved, or you couldn't understand how anyone could be around him.  He was very opinionated, optimistic, loving, sharing and giving. One of those people who either should have been born 100 years ago, or else 100 years into the future.
     Dad was the only child in his family to graduate from high school, and he was very proud of that fact.  He was very big on education, but was also a believer that "higher education" wasn't necessary for every one.
     When he got married, he was a driver for Monarch foods.  Later on, he became a cab driver with an electronics business that he operated out of their home at 252 Goodale Street, Columbus, Ohio.  The other half of the double that they rented was a grocery store, run by Louisanna Papsuri.  I remember our front yard as being concrete steps, and the back yard being concrete steps and maybe one foot of grass behind them.
     I'm not sure when he became a policeman, but by the time he and mother built the little house at 976 Eaton Avenue, Columbus, Ohio, that's what he was.
     Somewhere along the line, father learned the seamy underworld of the police force.  He was told that he was either "with us or against us".  Being the man he was, he couldn't go along with the pay offs, and agreed to retire on a medical disability.
     His next profession was working for the U. S. Post Office.  During his years there, he progressed from being a letter sorted, to maintenance and then on to a supervisory position.
     During his life time, he was a plumber, electrician, carpenter, roofer, certified locksmith, certified boiler maintenance, stamp collector and a firm believer in "you are what you eat".
     I don't believe that he ever saw a doctor until very late in his life.

     About April 29, 1994, I started gathering silk flowers to make a "Happy Basket" .  A friend asked me why I was going all over town trying to get the "just right" flowers, and what was so important about it.  I told her I had to have something that when I looked at it, it would make me happy.   I finished the basket on Wednesday evening, looked at it I told my husband, "it's ready".  He asked me "ready for what?", and I told him I didn't know, just that it was ready.   About this time I also started having strange dreams.  I kept seeing 55.  Road signs, the cost of items, on signs, even the face of clocks had 55 on them instead of a 5.  Also it seemed, in my dreams that the radio was always on 906.  In real life, I never listen to the radio.  Then my brother Charles came into town unexpectedly.
     On Thursday morning, May 5, 1994, Dad had gone out to the kitchen to fix mother some breakfast, she heard a "thud", and then nothing.  She had been mostly confined to bed because of back problems.  It took her a while to get out of bed, make her way into the kitchen, where she found him on the floor.  Mean while I had just left my house to bring my youngest granddaughter to my parents house so that they could watch her while I went to clean a clients house.  By the time I got half way in town, I started singing old gospel songs, and crying.
     When I got to their house, I couldn't open the door.  The table was pushed in front of it and no one was answering my knock.  I went to the front door, went in and saw that the furniture was all pushed away from the front door.
     I heard a knock at the door, and a neighbor told me that an ambulance had taken father to the hospital.  By the time I go there, he was declared 95% brain dead.  They had given him so much adrenalin to jump start his heart that that was the only thing that was keeping him "alive"?.
     We told the doctors to turn the machines off, and to let him go.  That is what he wanted.  My daughter and I sat with him until he crossed over, at 9:06 that night.
     His wishes were to donate what could be used and to cremate the rest.  No funeral, no fanfare, just a happy wake.
     That night my brother flew in from California.

     The number 55 was for May 5, the number 906 was the time he died, 9:06.  Charles came in town.  A little of Dad's ashes rest in a container in my "happy basket", and I have to smile when ever I look at it.

     On the Sunday after Daddy passed over, we took the container of ashes down to Jackson County, had a drink to father, and put some of the ashes in a beer stein in brother Larry's garage, father was so proud of that garage.  Then we drove to Vinton County, to Dan's home, and told the grandchildren that they were to spread the "Happy Dust" over the ground.  For some strange reason, it was still misty out, even around 10:00 in the morning.  When Amanda, Larry's oldest daughter, and Downs Syndrome, took some of the dust in her hands and threw it up in the air, the sun came out just at that moment right over where she was, and the dust sparkled as it was carried to its final resting places.  The look she had on her face as she saw it sparkling was incredible.
     Father now rests not only in our hearts, but some in Franklin County, Jackson County and in Vinton County.  He always wanted to live down in Vinton County, now he does.  When the time comes, the same will be done for mother.  Larry has the bronze plaque that the military donates, in lieu of a funeral, under one of the tall trees at his house.  The date on it of Dad's birth is wrong, but very close.

     The following is a copy of a letter that Brother Larry wrote for our Parents 50th anniversary.
     "TIME STANDS STILL"
     It has been said that the years we live cannot be measured by the days on a calendar, but by the hearts and lives that we touch.
     If a man has lived and died as a master of finance, and achieved all Worldly goods, his birth and death would be but the tick of a clock, had he not shared his life with those around him.  Love in itself, is but a shallow possession, until it is given or shared.  Only then can it grow and flourish.
     As we look back at our lives, we can see that we have lived an eternity, longer than most men ever will.  Not because we are old, but because the days of our lives have been filled.  A love has been shared with us by two people who have achieved infinite wealth through sharing.
     Dad didn't teach us to play the stock market, and Mom didn't teach us how to raise a family of four on a hundred dollars a week.  They taught us to care.  They didn't read it from a book or put it on a chalk board ..... they lived it.  Sharing, not just the good times, but also the bad and the indifferent.
     You know something?  The lesson isn't over, when our lives seem to be falling apart, when it seems that the world has turned it's back on us, and when it seems that there is no way out, a hug from them still fills us once again, and for a moment ....... TIME STANDS STILL.

     This is a copy of a letter I wrote my parents for their 50th anniversary.

My Parents
     It's so hard to put into words what my parents mean to me.  I suppose that is because it is because of them that I am what I am.  The values I have, and the values that I have tried to instill in my children and grandchildren.
     Father is the cornerstone of my existence, but Mom is the foundation.  Daddy's love to me was going to parades, and sitting on his big strong shoulders, so that I could get a good view of what was going on.  Jumping into the old sedan and chasing after a fire truck.  Sunday car rides, and the long sought after ice cream cone at Allen's dairy.  Taking a picnic lunch, and sitting in the car to watch the planes landing and taking off at the airport.
     Daddy is the one I ran to in tears, when Mom said I couldn't get married.  All he asked, was two questions.  Was I sure, and did I love Larry?  When I answered yes to both questions, he took me in his arms and said, "Don't worry, Bessie will sign, I promise you."  I remember the cold winters when he took so many over time jobs, to make sure that Santa would be visiting our house that year.  He even gave me the job of polishing his shoes, and PAYING me to do it.  A nickle sure went a lot further back then.
     Our Christmas's weren't the normal ones.  He had to get up so early to get on the beat, that we got up in the wee hours of the morning, so that he could see us, when we opened our presents.  To this day, I know that my Christmas tree is a tribute to both of my parents.  Santa would always come after we were asleep and put it up on Christmas eve.  Every strand of icicle had to be put on in such a manner as to hang freely.  The decorations had to be placed so that every one could be seen and so many of them had memories attached to them.  I suppose that is a little part of why I love to have OLD decorations on my tree.  I sometimes sit and try to think of the children who have sat in front of their tree and looked up at it in awl and wonderment.
     Daddy not only gave me life, he was the one who saved my life when I was drowning in the pond of some family friend.  He swam out and once again those big strong shoulders lifted me to safety.
     I don't ever remember Daddy ever touching me in anger.  All he had to do was to call me by name, Barbara Jean, and my world was crushed.  Oh God, I made my father angry.  God how I hated those little pieces of paper they called "stamps".  He went into their bedroom and sat in front of the mahogany drop front desk, and became "untouchable".  I wanted him to come out and "play" with me, with us.
     Our nights of pick-up-sticks, puzzle making, cards with beans, match sticks, or macaroni as betting instruments, parchessi, or just sitting and listening to his beautiful deep voice, while he told us of the "old days".  I remember running to get the matches for him, so that he wouldn't have to ever stop, just because his pipe had gone out.
     He was always such a quiet man, but his strength could be felt by everyone.  You may not have always agreed with him, but you could always count on him.  Both physically and mentally.  That part hasn't changed.  He's there when ever I need him.

     Mother was the foundation that my life had been built on.  In every thing that I do, there is some part of her and her teachings.
     We grew up never knowing just poor we really were.  Poor as far as material things went that is.  Never poor in the care, attention and Love that is so vital a part of a healthy childhood.
     Mother could make so many meatless meals that until I grew up, I never really realized that the only days we ever had meat was on Sundays.  We had either chicken or a chuck roast.  I do remember that I couldn't wait to get home from church, because she always had dinner waiting for us, or else it wouldn't be too long before it would be sitting on the table.  No one was ever turned away from our house wanting food.  What ever we had, it could be stretched to accommodate the situation.  She is still trying to feed the world.
     Mother taught me to sew at a very early age.  I always liked it as a way to pass time, but Horrors to Betsy, she wanted me to wear home made clothes to school.  Because money was never discussed, I never knew that that was the only way that she could afford to dress me.  I think the words I hated most were, "It's just like the one you saw".  I KNEW it wasn't, but she tried so hard to make me look like the other girls.  In all honesty, I probably looked as good, maybe better.  We never had to wear tattered or dirty clothes.  She was proud of us, and wanted us to be proud of ourselves.
     Mother taught me some very important facts of life.  Everyone wants to win, and that some one has to loose.  But, just because you lost, it doesn't make you a LOOSER.
     Damn, that was a hard lesson to learn.  She instilled in me a sense of my own self worth.  That as long as I liked myself, and I didn't hurt anyone else, that I was worth everything that I thought that I was worth.  She taught me to Love with out expectations, and to let go.  If it's Love, it won't go away.  It may stray for awhile, but it will always be there to depend on.  You have to respect yourself if you expect anyone else to do so.  She taught me to laugh at myself, so that the laughs of others doesn't hurt as much.
     She's shown me that a mother can also be a friend.  Someone to share ideas, hopes and dreams with.  Friends don't always agree with each other, but they allow the other person to express them selves and to have their differences, without it effecting their friendship.  She is and has always been My Friend.
     Mother and Father have taught me what all the aspects of Love are.  Caring, Sharing, Unquestioning, Forgiving, Dependable, Comfortable, Warm, even Argumentive.  Even that has it's positive aspects.
     These are my parents, two people that have cried, laughed, struggled, achieved, failed, (but never really failed), endured and grown together.  I'd never trade them, even if I had my choice of all the other people who have ever lived.  It is because of what they were and are, that I am what I am.  I kinda like myself.
     Thank You for a job well done.

     We had to place mother in a nursing facility in March of 1998.  In the years since father's death, she has had two back surgeries and a total knee replacement.  She is starting Alzheimer,  and is into the second stage of Demetria.  At the writing of this, October 1998, she seems to have adjusted to life as it is now.  She is getting the care that she needs, and is on medication to control her Demetria.  Part of the need to put her in the nursing home was the fact that she falls often, and we were having to call 911 to help us pick her up.  She is well thought of there, and is participating in the activities.

     Charles is a graduate of Missouri University, and has worked primarily as a production manager.  His job usually entails getting a failing company back on it's feet, and once back up, he is out of a job.
     He has hopes of opening a book store of his own some day, and hopefully he will be able to achieve this dream.
     My dream is for him to move away from California before "the big one" strikes.

     I've been a wife, mother, grandmother, care giver and housekeeper for almost all my life.
     Having worked as a meat packer, gift wrapper, air photo painter, bookkeeper, accountant, secretary, private secretary, and house cleaner.  No one profession, just what ever there was to do.
     I love to do crafts, but am very picky about what I want to display or to give.  I have been sewing since I was a very young girl.  My love of antiques is very deep, and complex.  Trying to figure out who once owned them, and the emotions that were felt at the time is important to me.
     Bickering is extremely negative to my emotional well being.  I need serenity and peace.
 
 

Notes for RAYMOND LARRY HATHCOCK:
     Raymond is a very complex man.  On the surface he is the most logical infuriating person that I have ever met.  The surface is very deep, but underneath is a tender soul.
     I was only 14 at the time I met him.  My friend Donna and I were helping her mother repair their front porch.  My hair was in curlers, no makeup on, I was wearing an old shirt that I had swiped from another girl friend's brother, a nasty pair of my older brother's blue jeans, and I was bare footed.  We heard a car stop, and out stepped at least three young Air Force men.  I'm not sure of the amount, because once I saw Larry (Raymond), I failed to notice much of anything else.  He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen.  He looked like a Greek God to me.  Dark, almost black hair, high cheek bones, square jaw, and the deepest brown eyes I had ever seen.
     After making a hasty excuse, I ran home, pulled on some decent clothes, ran a comb through my hair, put on a pair of shoes, and returned to my "Apollo".  That evening I told Donna that I was going to marry him some day.  We were married about 17 months later.  The Air Force was sending him to Tripoli North Africa, and he wanted us to get married before he left.
     We have had our ups and downs during the 39 years that we've been married, but the one sustaining factor that has always been there, is respect.  I don't always agree with him, but he has never forced his opinion on me.  He has helped me to learn that I MUST see both sides of an issue.  I may not want to see the other side, but I have to know what it is in order to understand why the opponent is acting like they are.
     I don't know of anyone that he has ever intentionally tried to hurt.  He loves my family as his own.  My brothers are HIS brothers.  My parents were/are His parents.  His family, (including the extended one), except for his love for his God, is the most important thing in his life.  The emotions that he has, are kept in line.  This doesn't mean that he doesn't have them, just that he doesn't allow them to rule his life.  He has a very dry sense of humor, and people don't always understand him.  On the other hand, It is very hard for him to understand US.
     He has taken care of me, to the best of his ability, from day one.  I've always been allowed the same freedom that he expects me to give him.  Admittedly, there are times that I am lonely, from all that freedom, but I know that it is necessary for him.  He has made mistakes, but he has learned from them.  After all, that is the LOGICAL thing to do, and he has never made the same mistake twice.  He doesn't jump into anything, until he has studied it from every angle.
     In this man there is: Love, Logic, Compassion, Tenderness, Respect, Giving,  Faithfulness, Understanding, Caring, Hard Work Ethics, and a great need of the same, from the people that he has chosen to be allowed into the circle of his life.  That is only LOGICAL after all.

     Jason is a photographer, and has recently opened his own studio in Cincinnati.  He had previously worked for two studios in Cincinnati, but was ready to open one of their own.  Their studio is called, "A Shot In The Dark".
     They live in a small town about 25 miles from Cincinnati, Ohio.  Having purchased a house in need of attention, they now have a beautiful home.
     He and his wife have purchased thirty some acres in Monroe County, Ohio, and are planning on building a straw house there.  They will be completely self sufficient in their home.  Well water, solar heating and generator back-up for electricity.  They are both of the primitive life style; loving to camp, hike, ski, bike riding,   Building with wood, refinishing furniture, antique hunting, gardening, landscaping and animals.
     Jason attended Antonelli Institute of Photography in Cincinnati, after joining the Army Reserves in 1985.
     Jason is sensitive, caring, loving and has always been a joy to my life.

     Debbie is a wonderful wife for my son.  She loves him beyond all words, but she still has a personality and opinions of her own.  She is Jason's first Love and the marriage is a good one.  I am so very pleased that she is a part of our family.
     Crafting is a hobby that she is very good at, and both she and my son are semi-skilled at antique refinishing.  She is about the hardest working female that I have ever known.  She works along side Jason, in every endeavor that he wants to tackle.

     Her greatest achievement has been her two lovely daughters.  She has become a great mother.  I am very proud of her.

     One June 19th, 1998, Vikki broke both bones in her fore arm of her left arm.  The final cast was removed on July 31, 1998.

     Victoria is a tall, trim and very loving young lady.  She has hazel eyes and blonde hair.  She loves to read, play volley ball, does arts and crafts, does very well in school and has a very gregarious personality.  She is sensitive and caring.  She is also her mother's daughter; so much like her that it is uncanny.

Notes for ANASTASIA EVELYN KISE:
     June 9, 1998:  This is a Red Letter Day.  Victoria just called me and told me that she got Anna to not only agree to buy, but to actually wear a pair of "actual pants".  Anna is nine years old now, and as thin as a rail.  She has medium brown hair and hazel eyes.  From the time she was a little baby, if anyone tried to put anything with buttons on her, she would pull at them, and start screaming, until they were removed.  All her clothing has been of the pull on kind.  She has always been our "chicky leg" girl.  She never did drink milk as either an infant or a baby.  By the time she was 13 months old, you had to have three infant feeders in front of her.  She was "drinking" 15 to 18 bottles of baby food a day.  Because of the lack of milk products in her diet, she never developed fat cells, and will most likely be "thin" all her life.

     August 6, 1998 ....... Anna was involved in an accident today.  She and her best friend Sarah Criner were playing.  Sarah riding a bicycle and Anna being towed by a rope, was on a pair of roller blades.  Sarah failed to stop as she was exiting a little street, onto the larger street going towards the park, and a car hit the rear tire of the bike.  Sarah was flung over the hood of the car, landing in a yard.  Anna was sling shot into the rear right side of the car and sustained a fractured skull, concussion, and numerous cuts, abrasions, and contusions.  Sarah was basically without injury, Thank God.
     August 10, 1998 ..... Anna after having been in PICU for three days, was sent to a room yesterday.  All tubes and hoses except for the IV were removed from her.  We do not know the extent of her injuries yet.  She is trying very hard to follow instructions, open eyes, smile, squeeze my hand , and that sort of thing, but her reactions to them are a bit slow,  She is basically awake, but in a very very groggy state.  She still hasn't spoken a word, but that hopefully is due to the "Trauma" to her brain.  We should know more by the end of the week, just how far we can expect her to "come back".  What ever that may be, she is and always will be "Our Anna".  God has been with her all the way.  Just half of a second either way, and one of those two beautiful girls would have been dead.  Half a second faster, Sarah, half a second slower, Anna.  The car hit at such a time, that neither girl was killed, one only slightly injured, and Anna was chosen to sustain the greater of injuries.  Only God knows why she was chosen.  Maybe to teach us all a lesson.  To see the "Beautiful Little Soul", that is behind that independent exterior.
     The driver of the car, Patrica Zahara has been so worried about her.  We hold absolutely no hard feeling towards her.  It wasn't her fault.
     August 11, ..... Anna said her first words today, "Thank You".  Sarah had brought her a stuffed frog, and when it was handed to Anna in the presentation bag, Anna thanked her.  She also ate her first meal today after five days.  Hamburger, french fries, apple sauce, green beans, and pudding.  Along with one and a half containers of chocolate milk.  She started her therapy classes today.
     August 12, ..... the IV was removed today.  I took her down stairs for an outing, so that I could have a cigarette.  It was at this time that I asked her who I was, and she very softly said my name.  While out side, she asked me if she could borrow 80 cents, so that she could get a sandwich.  I wheeled her right inside to the vending machines and told her to get anything she wanted.  She had consumed an Italian sub and container of chocolate milk before we got to the elevator.  I was later to learn that this was part of her "compulsive behavior".  An affliction of her type of brain trauma.  It is supposed to lessen with time, and should most likely go away totally.  She told me today that the "angels" had been talking to her.
     August 13, ..... She is reading, writing, playing nintendo, and attending therapy classes.  Her improvement is daily.  Her script is not as clear as it once was, but this may be due to the fact the every thing she does, she has to do as fast as she can.  All part of the compulsive behavior.
     August 14, ..... A little unsteady on her feet at times, but her speech seems to be the main problem right now.  It is very slow and slurred.  She can't always get out what she wants to say.  It is the temple region of the brain that controls speech, and this is where her fractured skull is.  She tires easily, but otherwise is very quick with her mind, and can beat me at Connect Four.
     August 19, .... Anna had an MRI today to determine what was causing the high blood pressure and the flat face.  A huge blood clot was found in the frontal lobe.  An operation is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
     August 20, .... The operation was a complete success.  While wheeling her back to her room from recovery, I could see that Anna had expressions on her face.  She has a five inch incision from the top of her head to the top of her right ear.  Under it is an additional three holes to suck the blood clot out.
     August 25, ..... Anna came home today.  Her recovery was nothing short of an absolute miracle.  God has blessed us all.  She still has a little problem with short term memory, some deficit in her attention span, and a little bit more "hyper" than her usual self, but these all should go away by six months to a year.  She gets tired more easily, and we must protect her head because of the four holes that have been drilled in it, but she is basically back to her old self.
