William Carmean, oldest child of Pearson and Elizabeth Carmean, was born in 1799, was a native of Del aware and while a young man, moved to Ohio and settled in Buckskin Township, Ross County, Ohio, near Old Chillicothe, on Buckskin Creek. There, on May 6, 1819, he married Margaret Miller, a native of Pennsylvania and a daughter of George Miller, who was of Dutch descent. To this marriage were born ten children: George, Frederick, Sarah, William, Mary, Jacob, Elizabeth, Rachael, Joseph, and Edward. William moved to Auglaize County, Ohio, after marriage and was accidentally drowned around November 1844 in the Big Auglaize River, while attempting to ford the stream on horseback.

[ The patriotism of the Carmean family was well represented, during the late Civil War, by four of the sons, who enlisted in the following order: Joseph, in Allen county, in August, 1861, in company B, Eighty-first Ohio volunteer infantry, veteranized in January, 1864, was mustered out at Louisville, Ky., July 13, 1865, and died in Van Wert county July 3, 1867; William enlisted in Allen county, in August, 1862, in company A, One Hundred and Eighteenth Ohio volunteer infantry, was promoted to sergeant, and detailed for duty at Nashville, Tenn.; Edward enlisted in Allen county, February 29, 1864 in company D, Eighty-first Ohio volunteer infantry, was confined four months in hospital, and was mustered out at Louisville, Ky., July 13, 1865; Jacob D. enlisted at Lima, Allen county, September 24, 1864 in company G, One Hundred and Eightieth Ohio volunteer infantry, was in hospital at Washington, D. George the oldest son of William Carmean was born in Old Chillicothe, Ohio [ Frankfort is the name now] At the age of 16 he walked through the woods from Chillicothe to Wapakonetta, a distance of 200 hundred miles. At Wapakonetta he found only one building, a log tavern. he met only one white man but numerous groups of Indians. He went to his uncle's cabin on Hog Creek in Marion Twp. Allen Co Ohio He killed,deer, turkey and not a few bear.

He located in Allen Co. in 1835 and in 1842 he married Elizabeth Carr from Ross Co. Ohio He came to Van Wert Co. in 1872 And lived Jackson Twp. where he acquired 80 Acers. They had seven children.

His toil was considerably mitigated in clearing his farm from woods,through the presence of a large number of neighbors and the readiness through which improved implements were available. He developed a fine and fertile farm, improved in every respect. He reared a highly respected family. He was one of the most experienced farmers in the Co.,and was an upright gentlemen who has never been known to commit an act of injustice nor ever violated his word.

He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and belonged to the old-line Wig Party and later was a Republican.*

Isaac Carmean was born in Allen Co. Ohio. When he was 18 years old the family moved to Wetzel

Jackson Twp., Van Wert Co. Ohio He married Ophelia Gallaway and set up house keeping north of Wetzel on Carmean rd. on the east side of Dog Creek. Ophelia died of consumption the day before Christmas in 1888 at the age of 28 years 2 months and 3 days. Stephen was only 5 years old at the time, 9 months later his father Isaac died of consumption at the age of 43 years 3 months 3 days. It must have been hard on the young boy. The grandparents of both families raised the children.

Stephen went to live with his grandparents along with Myrtle and Edward. The two oldest children were born on the old homestead in Jackson Twp. in a log cabin , Stephen then moved to Motz St. St. Marys Ohio. The trip took them two days by horse drawn wagon.
