Cedar Grove Cemetery

Cedar Grove Cemetery is located in southern Suwannee County near Branford and O’Brien Florida. Follow Hwy 129 from Branford toward Live Oak, Florida. County signs leading to the Cemetery begin at the caution light as you come to O’Brien on Hwy 129. The cemetery is located deep in a wooded grove and graves are in great need of attention though it appears some work has recently been done on the cemetery. Some older graves are found further back in the woods and will be missed at first glance. Many dozens of graves are unmarked, some have only funeral home grave placement markers, (FM), and a great number of these are no longer readable. Some concrete slabs have only scratched names and partial dates that are often no longer discernable.

No reliable history of the cemetery is available to the recorder at his time and will have to be added when discovered. Grave placement and secondary information suggest that the cemetery was originally connected with a Primitive Baptist Church, perhaps of the same name, that no longer exists. The older graves located in the woods and several fenced in areas seem to contain graves of White families and several Confederate Veterans while the larger cleared area is Black. Rumor has it that many slaves were buried here and graves were often marked with wood and sticks though no evidence remains, as not much care seems to have been used in clearing the larger area. Broken slabs are seen along some of the cemetery borders.

When unmarked graves are near marked graves they are listed as unmarked under the name of the near marked grave. ‘FM’ is meant to indicate a funeral marker. Revisions may be necessary.
