Lewis was the son of William S. Sparkman, Jr. and his second wife Sarah Surry. William and Sarah came to Florida while Florida was still a possession of Spain settling first in Nassau County and then later in Alachua County in the Hatchett Creek area. William died November 19, 1844 and Sarah a few years earlier. Lewis was the fifth child of William and Sarah. He had 9 brothers and sisters.
At the time of their marriage, Lewis and Hester were already the parents of two children; Houston Christopher Columbus Sparkman born July 5, 1846 in Palatka and Carline Frances born December 20, 1848 in Camptown, Alachua Co, FL. Banns had previously been posted in Alachua County in 1845. The delay between the posting of Banns and the marriage are unknown, but as Lewis was a virtual gypsy moving from place to place as a cattle drover may be the reason. It was not uncommon at that time for a couple to set up house-keepping after the posting of Banns and prior to the actual marriage ceremony.
