return to Cemeteries
This cemetery is located on Citrus Way (CR491) in Hernando County. Travel north from Brooksville on Ponce deLeon Blvd (US 98 North) to Citrus Way (approximately 8 mi)to the 2nd Flashing Light and turn left (south) on to Citrus Way. The cemetery will be on the left 1.5 miles right before the railroad Tracks
Built in the early 1900's to accommodate the spiritual needs of the Polish families that moved into the "Hammock Community" to work in the various lumber mills and rock mines. The cemetery and church are very picturesque and extremely well taken care of and owned by the Skarzynski and Buczak Families since the diocese abandoned it.
Now it is often used for weddings because of its simple beauty. Funerals for the deceased of families who attended church there still occur. I am not sure if masses on High Holy days are still performed there, but they used to be when I was growing up in the 1950's to 1970's. All comments in Lower Case italics are those of Laverne Tornow who grew up 1/2 mile from this cemetery and is well acquainted with many of those buried there or their descendants. This cemetery is no longer active as it is full. There are a very few spaces left and presumably they are reserved for the Buczaks (the directions and historical information by Laverne Tornow)
A Cemetery Survey of the known cemeteries of Hernando County was conducted by members of the Genealogy Society of Hernando County for the Hernando Heritage Museum between 1995 and 1998 and is placed on this site with permission. The cemetery surveys have been supplemented with information obtained from published obituaries, Garnett Funeral Home Records and personal knowledge of family members county residents and other sources.
