WILLIAM W. J. KELLY – LETTER TO HIS SISTER

 

Pensacola, 30 June 1865

 

My dear sister,

 

. . . .Pensacola presents a sad scene, every where the eye turns it rests on demolished buildings, and destroyed shrubbery, and as you pass along the shrub you must thread your way through milk weeks and long grass . . . . The old citizens who left are making arrangements to return here at as early a day as possible.  Many houses are requiring a great deal of work on them, that is, those that are standing, while some must build entirely new ones. . . .
