Elsie Hatcher Padgett, 90, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010. She was born on September 16, 1919 in Middleburg, FL to parents, Ellis and Ethel Hatcher. Mrs. Padgett was a retired bus driver with 30 years of service from the Clay County School System. She was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and had served as the church clerk and taught the Adult Ladies Sunday School class. Mrs. Padgett enjoyed gardening, sewing and cooking. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Padgett, Sr.; her parents, Ellis and Ethel Hatcher; 8 brothers and 3 sisters. She is survived by 5 sons and 1 daughter; Archie, Jr. (Barbara), Jerry (Anita), Kenneth (Susie), Wayne (Sharron), Glenn (Vicky) and Carole Bahl; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Black Pond Baptist Church. Lucille H. Padgett, 86, went to be with The Lord, passing away at her residence February 5, 2002. Of the Baptist faith, Mrs. Padgett was a longtime member of the Black Pond Baptist Church and was an active member of the womens Missionary Union, she dearly loved serving The Lord, spending time and sharing fellowship with her family and friends. Born November 12, 1915, in Clay County and was a lifelong resident of Middleburg, FL. After retiring from the Clay County School Board, Lucille enjoyed spending time taking care of her flowers, garden and sewing was always a pleasurable hobby of hers. Of her many blessed days of life on this earth, she touched the lives of many and will be missed immensely by all. Her beloved husband of 30 years of marriage, Marvin precedes Lucille in death in 1965, and her son Marcus Padgett, January 21, 2002. Mr. Padgett was born in Clay County and had lived here all his life. He was a member of the Black Pond Baptist Church where funeral services were held under the direction of Key-McCabe Funeral Home. The clergyman officiating was C. W. Carter. Interment was in the Black Pond Cemetery. Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Lucille Padgett; one daughter, Margaret Trew; one son, Marcus Padgett all of Middleburg; three sisters, Colea Chesser of Middleburg, Tinnie Padgett of Clay Hill and Totsie Mosley of Middleburg; two brothers, Earl and Irving Padgett of Middleburg and three grandchildren. Joseph Slate, age 63, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. He was born in Holden, West Virginia and has lived in Middleburg since 1960. He was employed by Benjamin Moore Paint Company for 35 years as a Chemical Engineer and Quality Control. Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Wanda Sue Slate. Two Sons: Chris (Percie) Slate, David (Carli) Tyler, Daughter: Missy (Mike) Reeves. Three brothers: Art (Ginny), Harold (Judy), Bill (Lois), Two Sisters: Norene and Ethel Mae (Gene), Many Nieces and Nephews, Seven Grandchildren: Mark, Megan, Steve, Carly, Cole, Marshall and Ayden. Joe was an avid Golfer, who enjoyed spending time with the family especially his grandkids as he was affectionately known as Papa Joe. Joe always took every opportunity to tell others about Jesus and be a witness for the Lord. Mr. Slate was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church for 22 years. John "Sammy" Snow, 79, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008. He was born on October 10, 1928 in Morven, GA to parents, Quinnie and Estelle Snow. Mr. Snow worked for Florida Rock for over 28 years and enjoyed gardening in his spare time. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the United States Army and was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mable Snow; daughter, Judy VanFossen (Max) of Green Cove Springs, FL; sisters, Polly Dumas (Wilbur) of Savannah, GA and Flora Eubanks of Quitman, GA; grandson, Travis VanFossen and great-grandson, Matthew VanFossen. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Saturday, July 5, 2008 at Broadus-Raines Funeral Home. STARLING Evelyn V., age 78 of Middleburg passed away on December 3, 2002 at the Life Care Center in Orange Park. She was born on June 4, 1924 to James and Lovey Keene in Orange Park, FL. Evelyn was a homemaker but had worked in food preparation for Orange Park High School. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, quilting, church and her family was her life. She will be remembered for her many handmade quilts that she made and gave away to others. Her testimony and knowledge of the Bible showed that she was a true Christian. She was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church in Middleburg. She was preceded in death by her parents James David and Lovey (Fountain) Keene; her husband of fifty years, William Harvey Starling; one daughter, Catherine Virginia Starling; one sister, Mary (Keene) Luke. She is survived by one sister, Letha Burroughs; four children; William David Starling, Anita Padgett (Jerry), Sally Guy (Jerry) and Kay Williamson (Kenny); Daughter in law, Joann Starling; ten grandchildren; Penny Mullins (Jeff), Junior Starling, (Mossie), Debra Duncan (Mark), J. Judy Diane Snow VanFossen, 59 of Green Cove Springs, FL died Monday, June 3, 2013 at her residence. Mrs. Vanfossen was a lifelong resident of Clay County and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Green Cove Springs. She was a veteran of the US Army stationed in Key West, a dispatcher for Florida Rock and worked as a phlebotomist for Memorial Hospital and Middleburg Family Medical before retiring as a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Max VanFossen, sons Travis (Collen) VanFossen, Michael (Debra) VanFossen, daughters, Stephanie (Russell) Striplin, Barbara (Chris) White, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Mr. Walter Lee Williams, Sr., 94, of Middleburg, FL went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 1, 2006. He was born on September 17, 1912 in Whitehouse, FL to Sylvester and Nancy Williams. Mr. Williams served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps and was a cattleman all of his life. He was one of seven generations of the Williams family in Southwest Duval County and Northwest Clay County. He spent many years in the timber business as well as being a real estate investor. Mr. Williams served on the Clay County Soil & Water Board and was a lifetime member of the Masons. Mr. Williams was of the Baptist faith and attended Black Pond Baptist Church. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by two children, Jerry Morgan Williams and Brenda Joy Brown. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Williams; children, Walter Lee Williams, Jr. (Sherry) of Jacksonville, FL, Kent Williams (Debbie) of Middleburg, FL, Hilda Jean Powers (Jerry) of Jacksonville, FL and Pernecia Gay Kennedy (Hiram) of Statesboro, GA; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wilson had worked as a librarian assistant and was a member of Black Pond Baptist Church in Middleburg. She enjoyed tole painting and cake decorating and will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Elsie Mullis; her loving husband, Herbert E. "Red" Wilson; a brother, David Mullis and sisters, Ella Juanita Mullis and Margie Collier. She was the loving mother of Pat Burris of Orange Park, Herb (Mary) Wilson of Palatka and Jimmy (Kimberly) Wilson of Middleburg as well as being survived by sisters, Jeannine Foster and Alicia (Frank) Bush; brother, Joe (Jane) Mullis; grandchildren, Laurie (Charlie) Creech, Lyndie (Wynn) Peery, Reggie (Krystal) Wilson and J.D. Herbert E. Wilson, 73, of Lake Delancey, died Thursday January 15, 2004. The Asheville, N.C. native lived in Lake Delancey since 1978, coming from Middleburg. He was a member of the Peniel Baptist Church a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, retired after 28 years as an aircraft electrician working civil service with NAS in Jacksonville. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #107 F & AM in Middleburg and the Morocco Temple Shrine. He is survived by his wife, Betty Wilson of Lake Delancey; daughter, Pat Burris of Orange Park; 2 sons, Herbie Wilson of Palatka and Jimmy Wilson of Middleburg; 4 grandchildren.
