Earl Barnes, 84 Dunnellon

Earl Harry Barnes, 84, Dunnellon, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Gainesville.

Born in Libertyville, Iowa, he came here in 1997 from Montross, Va.

He worked for the U.S. government in the Department of the Navy.

He was in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, a Wake Island survivor and Japanese POW for 45 months.

He was Methodist.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dunnellon, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Montross, Va., member of the American Ex-POW Association, and member of Rainbow Springs Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Barnes, of Dunnellon; two daughters, Roxana Barnes and Rosemary Barnes, both of Dunnellon; and two brothers, Richard Barnes of Sparks, Nev., and Edward Barnes of Forest Hills, Calif.

Mary Gentry, 74 Inverness

Mary K. Gentry, 74, Inverness, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, in Inverness.

Born Aug. 6, 1929, in Middletown, Ohio, to Silas and Addie McQuinn Collins, she came here in 2003 from St. Petersburg, where she had lived since 1969.

She was a retired technician for Eyecare in St. Petersburg.

She was a member of OES, Middletown, Ohio. She was Christian.

Survivors include a son, Terry Gentry (Beverly) of Inverness; granddaughter, Becky Dowdell; three grandsons, Terry Dowdell, Brian Repetto and Kevin Repetto; and three great-grandchildren.

Jean Kictarek, 83 Dunnellon

Jean Harriet Kictarek, 83, Dunnellon, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, in Inverness.

She was born in Salamanca, N.Y., and came here in 1978 from St. Petersburg.

Mrs. Kictarek was a homemaker.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Salamanca, N.Y.

Survivors include two sons, Danny Kictarek of Chapin, S.C., and Eddy Kictarek of Inverness; one daughter, Betty Mann of Dunnellon; a brother, George Rockwell of Salamanca, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Doris May, 95 Lecanto

Doris A. May, 95, Lecanto, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Brentwood Retirement Community.

Mrs. May was born Oct. 27, 1908, in Jacksonville, Ill., to Asa and Lilly Caroline Robinson.

She had been a seasonal resident since the 1950s, making Lake Panasoffkee her home in 1999.

She is survived by her niece, E. Rebecca Hendricker of Hernando.

Lawrence Newton, 88 Dunnellon

Lawrence Arthur Newton, 88, Dunnellon, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness.

A native of Pawtucket, R.I., he moved to Dunnellon in 1992 from North Attleboro, Mass.

Mr. Newton gave 65 years of service to Corning Glass, in charge of building manufacturing plants, many of them overseas in Russia, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, and was on hand during the Normandy invasion in the Infantry as a radioman.

Mr. Newton was a member of River Gardens Baptist Church in Dunnellon, and Rainbow Springs Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his son, Lawrence A Newton and wife, Phyllis, of Dunnellon; stepson Stanley Osowski Jr. and wife, Jane, of Mercerville, N.J.; sister Dorothy Kubelle of Sayville, Long Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 18 great-grandchildren; one niece; and one nephew.

Emma Robbins, 86 Hernando

Emma S. Robbins, 86, Hernando, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Inverness.

Born Jan. 18, 1917, in Odessa, N.Y., to Elmer and Any Searles, she came here in 1983 from Burdett, N.Y.

She was a hairdresser.

She attended First United Methodist Church, Inverness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denton D. Robbins, in 1984.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman, of San Carlos, Calif.; one grandson; and two great-grandsons.

Charles Smith, 69 Homosassa

Charles B. Smith, 69, Homosassa, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Homosassa.

Born Sept. 19, 1934, in New York City, N.Y., to Benedict and Beatrice Smith, he came here in 2001 from Roswell, Ga.

He was president of Lubri-Tech Inc., Roswell, Ga.; and general manager of MacPhearson Oil Products for the Southeast.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Smith was a 1957 graduate of the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Gators varsity basketball team and Sigma Chi Fraternity.

He coached track and basketball at Englewood High School, Jacksonville. He attended First United Methodist Church, Homosassa.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary "Fran" Flournoy Smith, Homosassa; son, Capt. Mark J. (Ashley) Smith, Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Lynn (Jim) Muster of Crystal River and Kristen Ehlers of Tampa; and three grandchildren.
