Brief History
The Florida Historical Society is Florida's only statewide historical society. It is also the oldest existing cultural organization in the state. Founded in 1856 in St. Augustine by a group of leading citizens, the Society is dedicated to the task of preserving the history of Florida through the collection, preservation and publication of pertinent historical documents. A secondary mission is the collection and display of artifacts relating to the peoples of Florida.
The Society publishes The Florida Historical Quarterly, a scholarly journal, and Journeys for the Junior Historian, a magazine of Florida history and fiction. In addition, the Society publishes occasional monographs and pictorial histories.
Within its collection, the Society has over 350 rare maps, 6000 volumes of Floridiana, and an extension collection of primary documents that date from the 15th century to the present. Among the notable collections are the papers of Richard Keith Call, the territorial governor, Civil War governor John Milton, and Pleasant W. White, the Confederate commissary officer. The Society also has a large collection of primary manuscripts from the WPA Federal Writers Project.
The society's collections are open to all bona fide researchers. Some research services are provided by staff members. The Society does not conduct genealogical research, but does provide referral information when possible.
The Society's permanent library is located at 435 Brevard Avenue in Cocoa Village, within a mile of the Central Florida Library & Reference Center.
