SMITH
posted by Jean T. Baxter on Saturday, November 21, 1998

I am doing research on a SMITH family from Florida. I have been lead to believe that maybe they lived in the Gainesville (Alachua County) area, but don't know for sure. Until recently I only had the nickname "Mamie" SMITH. I have now found out that her given name was Mary Elizabeth SMITH. We believe her to have been born around 1878. She had a sister whose name was Alice Pearl SMITH b. about 1887, either in Florida also or Georgia, again we are not sure. With a name like SMITH, and not knowing much, I have had little luck. Would love to find out who their parents were and if they had other siblings. Can anybody help us out? Thanks for your time.

Erastus ROGERS was the settler at Ft King, killed in the uprising of Dec 1835. He appears in the 1830 Alachua census and in the Florida Territorial papers. He also delivered mail to Ft King. While he appears in many history books, I am trying to find information about his family, both parents and possible children or siblings.

FAIRLEY, GEIGER, POWELL, WALDEN
posted by Stephanie Cecil on Saturday, December 19, 1998

Elwell M. POWELL, my paternal grandfather was never known to my Father, who was born 1905 and died 1988 in Fla. Elwell is supposed to have been born in Jacksonville, Fl probably in the early 1880s and his funeral was held in Gainesville, Alachua Co, in the 1950's or before 1963. I have the newspaper obit, sent to my Father by an aunt Alice POWELL WALDEN, IN 1963 from Jacksonville, but it does not show the year of his death nor the place of burial. The Obit says He was a 17 year employee of ACL,a Conductor, and a Mason, and left a widow Catherine Powell, and sisters Arlene FAIRLEY of Jacksonville, and Mrs. J L GEIGER of Zephyrhills. It also mentions Micanopy . If any of these names are familiar to anyone please contact me. I very much want to know more about Elwell M POWELL and his forebears. Thanks.

I am looking for the ancestry of my Gr Gr Grandfather Charles W. MCMINN who was born in 1838, joined Confederate army in 1862, and married and settled in northeast Mississippi around 1867. I have no knowledge of where he was born or how he arrived in Mississippi. I noticed a Charles W.
