Weston County was created March 12, 1890, from the southern portion of Crook County. It was named in honor or John Weston, a geologist and surveyor. The western portion of Weston County was lost to the creation of Campbell County in 1911.
Newcastle is the County Seat. In 1887, Jefferson Weston and Frank Mondell found rich coal deposits north of Newcastle which caused a railroad to be built through the area.
