A surviving son, Allen Keeney of Rock Springs, is the husband of the former Jean Yates, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Yates of Green River. The boys, whose home is at 291 Jensen, Green River, have been staying this week with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Eskridge, 656 West Railroad, Green River, while their father, Clarence Eskridge, is away. Friday they left their grandparents’ home to go rabbit hunting in the Pilot Butte area, north of Green River. Driving their own two-door Volkswagen, the boys said they would return by 8 p.m. When they failed to show up, the grandparents notified sheriff’s officers, and Deputies E.L. Chapman and William Potts, together with Clyde Eskridge and friends of the family, set out to search. Part of the group continued the search overnight. Their efforts were supplemented Saturday morning by about 25 persons from the Game-Fish department, sheriff’s officers, patrolmen, Civil Air Patrol members, Boy Scouts and other volunteers. Sighted From Plane Steve Zubatch, Rock Springs CAP officer, piloting a search plane, was accompanied by Harry Nicolas, CAP, as observer, when they spotted the vehicle from the air Saturday about 10 a.m. The boy, they said, was stretched out in the road near the vehicle, Zubatch and Nicholas set down at the Stauffer Chemical company landing strip, northwest of Green River, to telephone officers and direct them to the site. Sheriff Nimmo said the car, which appeared to have gone out of control and rolled over completely, coming to rest on its wheels, was located on the Blue Rim road, near Alkali bridge. Evidence at the scene, the officer pointed out, would indicate that Edward had dragged his brother from the vehicle, and placed him on the ground beside it. He used clothing, sweater, sweatshirt, parka and trousers, which were carried in the vehicle, to cover the younger boy. The older brother also built a fire nearby. Unable to Track Youth Sheriff Nimmo said tracks of the missing boy were found around the car, but searchers were unable to find where he left the accident scene, or to track him away from the car, although their efforts throughout the afternoon were supplemented by bloodhounds from the state penitentiary at Rawlins. The animals, which worked about four hours attempting to track the youth, could not come up with anything, the sheriff said. The air search continued all afternoon, with horsemen and men on foot also scouring the rough country. Sheriff Nimmo said that because of the rough terrain, cars were not much help. Suffering From Cold Richard, unconscious when discovered, apparently was suffering intensely from the cold. The full extent of his injuries had not been determined, as major efforts were given over to treating him for exposure. He was unable to add any information, according to Sheriff Nimmo, as he does not remember the accident, has no idea of the time, when it happened and does not know if his brother were injured. Because of the extremely cold weather, registered at 14 at Federal Aviation Agency headquarters at Rock Springs airport Saturday morning, great concern has been expressed for the older brother’s welfare, since it was not known whether or not he suffered injuries in the auto accident, officers said. --- Rock Springs Miner, Feb 17, 1963 MRS. Nimmo while plans for funeral services were being completed for the missing youth's younger brother, Richard, 15, who died at 4:10 a.m. Wednesday morning of injuries suffered in an automobile accident and exposure. Sheriff Nimmo's office reported Thursday afternoon that the search would be continued Friday morning on the same schedule as for previous days. Volunteers are asked to report at the Sheriff's office in Green River at 6:30 a.m. and to Undersheriff James Stark in Rock Springs at the city hall. The older brother has been the subject of an intensive search by hundreds of volunteers, afoot, mounted horseback and in jeeps and trucks since last Saturday morning. The younger brother was found lying beside the wrecked car near the bridge on Big Alkali creek, on the cut-off road between the Blue Rim road and 14-mile on US 187. He succumbed of injuries which included a damaged spinal cord that left paralysis from the waist down, frozen extremities and exposure. The youths had left Green River with the permission of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Eskridge, to go rabbit hunting Friday afternoon. When they did not return late that evening, their absence was reported to the sheriff and the first search was launched. The wrecked car, with Richard lying beside was first spotted Saturday morning by Steve Zubatch and Harry Nicholas of the Rock Springs Civil Air Patrol, and they landed at the Stauffer airport to notify authorities. Apparently the older brother had pulled Richard free of the wrecked car, covered him with his own parka, built a fire and then departed to seek help, walking without head cover and in shirtsleeves in the near-zero temperatures. Searchers Sunday were able to track Edward for several miles before losing the trace just prior to the storm which left about three inches of snow in the area Sunday afternoon. Although warming weather melted the snow cover in the ensuing days of the search, no further evidence has been found to guide searchers for the missing youth. The two youths had been in the charge of their grandparents while their father Clarence was in Las Vegas on a honeymoon trip with his bride. The couple married last Wednesday, returned to Green River early Sunday after having received notification of the accident. --- Green River Star, Feb 21, 1963 Eskridge Rites At LDS Chapel Here Saturday Funeral services for Richard Eskridge, 15, will be held in the LDS Chapel in Green River Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with first counselor Erwin J. Nimmo, sheriff of Sweetwater county, who has directed the grueling hunt. Traces of footprints and remains of a fire which looked as promising upon their discovery late Friday, and encouraged a fatigued crew in the Saturday efforts, failed to lead searchers to the youth. The fire had been built in Alkali Wash area, about seven miles south of the location of the auto accident believed to have occurred the night of Feb. 15 and which claimed the life of Edward’s young brother, Richard, 15. Funeral-Memorial Services Funeral services conducted Saturday morning at the Green River LDS church for Richard, also served as memorial services for Edward. The younger boy was buried in Riverview cemetery. Sheriff Nimmo, in concluding the organized search Saturday said, “We’ve walked until we don’t know where to walk any more.” Everybody has been “wonderful” the officer said but emphasized that everybody was worn out, particularly the foot walkers. “We’ve been on it eight days and we’ve covered lots of area,” the sheriff said. “We have had all the cooperation and help and assistance from offices and volunteers it is possible to imagine. They have come from all over through the cooperation of companies, corporations and merchants, who have let their employees off to help out.” No Additional Evidence Saturday, Sheriff Nimmo said there was no additional evidence to which to tie a longer search. “We covered the area where the fire had been built, then swept north and east from that location then turned further south.” Explaining that it was difficult to determine if Edward, or some other hunter, or a sheepherder, had started the fire, the sheriff said his searchers found no further footprints. A large group of Evanston residents, as well as a contingent from Dutch John, Utah, joined searchers, about 75 strong, Saturday. Several of them were mounted on horseback, some used the four-wheel-drive vehicles, and others used scooters, all without success in finding the lost youth. Riders to Return Sheriff Nimmo said some of the horseback riders plan to return Sunday to continue an “Unofficial” search of the limitless area but said the official search is at an end. The search which at times had drawn an estimated 300 person into the area, was instigated after Richard and Edward failed to return home Friday night after an afternoon rabbit hunting trip in their Volkswagen which took them along the Blue Rim road, in the Pilot Butte area, north of Green River. The wrecked vehicle which had overturned completely and was back on its wheels, was sighted near the Alkali bridge by a spotter in a CAP plane, who also saw Richard Eskridge on the ground beside the vehicle. Evidence at the scene indicated that Edward has pulled his brother from the wreckage, covered him over with his own parka, and then built a fire nearby. Then the older brother apparently set out, in his shirt sleeves, in search of assistance. The younger boy, taken to Sweetwater County Memorial hospital, was unable to give a lucid account of what had happened, and Wednesday morning died of his injuries, which included damage to the spinal cord, creating paralysis from the waist down, and extensive injury to both feet from frostbite, as well as general exposure and shock. Bloodhounds Used The search for Edward began Saturday, with blood hounds from the state penitentiary at Rawlins pressed into the search for four hours, but failing to come up with a trail Sunday searchers followed a set of tracks, believed to have been made by Edward, which moved to the southwest and then west away from the accident scene. The trail was lost when the snowstorm swept the area Sunday afternoon. Since that time the searchers have worked doggedly from early morning until sundown daily, with no success. Search lines, made up of persons afoot, and other crews on horseback, have moved across countless miles of rough sagebrush country. Men afoot have even crawled through thickets which were impassable to the upright walker or to searchers on horseback, with the thought that an injured youth may have sought shelter among the bush. All efforts have been fruitless. --- Rock Springs Miner, Feb 24, 1963 Murder Charge Filed In Utah Girl’s Death SALT LAKE CITY (UPI)—First degree murder charges were filed against a part time dishwasher Saturday in the death of an 18-year-old Salt Lake City girl brutally beaten with a hammer. Rex Hintze, 17, of Salt Lake City has been free on $5,000 bond awaiting preliminary hearings on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder. He was taken back into custody after Carole Annette Clayton, one of two victims of a hammer-wielding assailant, died in a local hospital. Hintze was arraigned before Dist. Judge Joseph Jeppson who set preliminary hearing for March 5 at Toole. The defendant was taken to Salt Lake County Jail where he will be held without bail until the preliminary hearing. Miss Clayton and her roommate, Dorinda Atnes, 18, were bludgeoned near Great Salt Lake Wednesday. Both were near death and buried in makeshift graves in the brushland when Tooele County law enforcement officers found them. Hintze, who was arrested near the area where the two girls were beaten and buried alive, said the girls “wouldn’t help us get the car unstuck.” “I got furious. That’s why I hit them,” Hintze said. Both girls suffered multiple skull fractures. --- Rock Springs Miner, Feb 24, 1963 KAKUJI OKANO Funeral services for Kakuji Okano, 72, were held Saturday morning at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion. A year ago the state’s road toll was eight. Victims of the Sunday crashes were Donald Crook, 19, of Dubois and John Haratyk, 44, of Thermopolis. Cook was the first to die, killed when his sports car missed a curve on U.S. 26 about four miles west of Dubois. The Wyoming Highway Patrol said the car was going at a high rate of speed when it left the road and plunged 60 feet into a canyon. Haratyk was killed outright and a woman companion seriously injured when his car ran out of control on U.S. 20 near Boysen Dam and slammed into the canyon wall. The accident occurred about 18 miles south of Thermopolis. Haratyk was southbound toward Shoshoni. The passenger, identified as Dorothy Gates, 36, was taken to Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis. --- Rock Springs Daily Rocket, Feb 26, 1963 Search ‘On Their Own’ Seek Missing Youth The official search for 16-year-old Edward Eskridge, missing since Feb. 15 in the sagebrush country north of Green River, ended Saturday, but several searchers “on their own” were out looking for the youth Sunday and Monday. Sheriff George Nimmo, who directed the eight grueling days’ organized search, acknowledge with appreciation the efforts of those who continued to cover the territory. Sunday’s searchers included some horseback riders, who came in for the day from neighboring areas. The Evanston search and rescue unit spent Monday further combing the Pilot Butte-Blue Rim road country, and several persons from Green River joined in. Edward is believed to have become lost while seeking aid for his injured brother, Richard, 15, following an automobile accident along the Blue Rim road, about 29 miles north of Green River, possibly late Friday night, Feb. 15. The younger boy, who died Wednesday, was buried Saturday. The funeral service for him also served as a memorial for his brother. In discontinuing the search late Saturday, Sheriff Nimmo said, “We’ve walked until we don’t know where to walk anymore.” --- Rock Springs Daily Rocket, Feb 26, 1963 Ernest Megeath, Long-Time Area Resident, Dies Ernest Yoder Megeath, resident of Rock Springs and neighboring communities the past 70 years, died Saturday at 10:05 p.m. in Sweetwater County Memorial hospital after a brief illness.
