Sheridan County ObituariesKirkman, BertSheridan Post, Tuesday, January 25, 1916, page 1 Two Deaths at Distance Two residents of Sheridan met death at distant points recently through unnatural causes, the victims being Mrs. Elias Mydland, who died at Evanston, Wyoming, Sunday as a result of exposure, and Bert Kirkman, who was killed Saturday morning when a Great Northern passenger train upon which he was a passenger was struck by a snowslide near Corea, Washington, in the Cascade Mountains. News of the Tragic death of Mr. Kirkman, who was a well driller by trade and had lived in Sheridan for several years, reached Sheridan Saturday night in press dispatches. It appears that the train in which he was riding had been stalled in the Cascades by a small slide. The snow had just been shoveled away and the train was ready to proceed, when a second slide came, carrying the dining and chair cars into a deep ravine and overturning the smoking car. Mr. Kirkman was among those in the chair car. When his body was recovered, life was extinct. His identity was established by papers on his person. Several other passengers were killed or injured at the same time. Mr. Kirkman is survived by a wife and six children, all of them small. he left Sheridan but a short time ago in search of a new location. It is said that he had had a premonition of evil before leaving and almost abandoned his plan. The thought of danger stuck with him even after leaving and two accident insurance policies, each paying $5000 in case of death, were taken out by him in favor of his wife. One policy was taken out in Sheridan, the second in Spokane. A relative of the dead man is now enroute to Washington to take charge of the remains and bring them back to Sheridan for burial. Sheridan Post, Friday, January 28, 1916 The remains of Bert Kirkman, who was killed in a snow slide in the Cascade mountains in Washington last Saturday, are to reach Sheridan today and funeral services will be held in the Baptist Church tomorrow forenoon. Immediately after the service the body will be taken to Alliance, Nebraska for interment. Sheridan Post, Tuesday, February 1, 1916 The remains of Bert Kirkman, killed in a snowslide in the Cascade mountains 10 days ago, have been interred in Sheridan, the members of his family deciding against the first plan of shipping the body to Nebraska. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church Saturday. |
