WIDELY-KNOWN LOCAL RESIDENT DIES ON SUNDAY Death came quietly to the doctor who had administered to the ills of others in Wyoming for 43 years. He remained conscious almost to the end, and retained the sparkle and cheerfulness that won him so many friends throughout his lifetime. A resident of Sheridan since 1914, Dr. Johnson, fresh from Ohio State university, came to Wyoming with his bride in 1899, settling in Aspin in the southwestern part of the state. A year and a half later he moved to Cambria, then a booming coal camp in Weston county near Newcastle. He later moved to Newcastle, and practiced there until coming to Sheridan. He represented Weston county in the Wyoming state legislature in 1904 and 1905. Dr. Johnson was always very active in community and fraternal affairs. He served as Grand Master for Wyoming of the Odd Fellows lodge, Potentate of Kalif Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., president of the Sheridan County Medical society, president of the Sheridan Rotary club, and was a Scottish Rite Mason, a charter member of the Elks lodge, and for may years a member of the Knights of Pythias. Dr. Johnson was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on Sept. 20, 1870. He was raised in Portsmouth, and received his medical training at Ohio State university. He was married on April 10, 1898—the same year he received doctor’s degree from the university—and Dr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Wyoming the following year. He retired from active practice about three years ago, but, despite his failing health, continued to keep a good attendance record in the Sheridan Rotary club, one of his favorite organizations. He is survived by Mrs. Johnson and by two daughters, a son, three grandchildren, and two brothers and two sisters. The daughters are Mrs. Charlotte Benson of Burlingame, Cal., who flew to Sheridan Sunday to be with her father before he passed away, and Mrs. Jeanette Janney of Sheridan. The son, who arrived Monday, is Wallace Johnson of Mount Vernon, Ill. The grandchildren are Roderick Janney, Linda Benson and Robert Johnson. The brothers are Clarence Johnson of Portsmouth, Ohio, and David Johnson of Huntington, W. V., and the sisters are Mrs. Sarah Kropp of Nehawka, Neb., and Mrs. Florence Blake of Dayton, Ohio. Masonic funeral services will be held from the Reed Mortuary on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Dr. J. Willis Hamblin, Dr. Johnson’s pastor in the First Presbyterian church, will officiate.
