Cattle War of 1892

Photo taken June 25-1955.
The note on the back of this photo reads..."We prepared the dynamite that was carried in the Homesteaders moving fort at the TA Ranch fight April 11th 12th 13th 1892 during the Johnson County Cattle War."

April 9th is infamous in local history as this was the day in history that Nate Champion and Nick Ray were killed by 50 "Invaders" as they would be known, at the KC Cabin in 1892. Champion and Ray were considered "rustlers" by the Invaders, who had a list of people, including the county sheriff, they intended to kill. Cool-headed and a dead shot, Champion held off the Invaders from inside the cabin the entire day, until they were able to set fire to the cabin, forcing Champion out and into a line of bullets. However, Champion's bold defense allowed word of the Invasion to get out in time for the outraged citizens of Johnson County to mount an offensive against them.
