Sheboygan Pioneer Monthly Supplement

Happy At 97

One of Sheboygan's oldest inhabitants, Mrs. Minna Schmidt, observed her 97th birthday the 19th ult. at home with her daughter and son-in-law, The Con. Vanderyachts, 704 Pennsylvania avenue, in the presence of nearly thirty relatives and friends.

Mrs. Schmidt was born in Germany and came to America with her parents when she was fourteen years of age, after absolving the grammar school in her native city. Later she married here, her husband many years later passing away. She was the mother of nine children, of whom three have passed on.

Of a cheerful disposition, Mrs. Schmidt has a host of friends, and on her birthday she always received many telegrams and cards of congratulation, and numerous bouquets of beautiful floral offerings. Her six children and twenty-five grandchildren afford her great pleasure, and most of them correspond with her regularly. One of her daughters, Miss Millie, and her son, Louis, live with her in apartments with the Vanderyachts.

Mrs. Schmidt has a good memory, reciting many German poems and telling many stories of her younger days. She does not look her age, as we say, her smiling countenance impressing all those who come in contact with her. Her health is excellent, too, proving that to grow old gracefully is a rare accomplishment.
