Theodor Benfey, who passed away several weeks ago, was one of Sheboygan's foremost attorneys, was a member of many fraternities, was a member of the Sheboygan volunteers in the war with Spain in Cuba, was active in political life for many years, and having been a citizen of whom we all could be proud.

Mr. Benfey's fraternal affiliations included membership in the Elks club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Ninety-Nine club, the F. & A. M., the C.C.C. club, the Serpents, the American Bar association, the Sheboygan County Bar association, and in all these capacities he was prominent. He was also appointed court commissioner for Sheboygan County under Judge Michael Kirwan.

Mr. Benfey's political, fraternal and business activities sufficed to keep him busy during a very active life, which he spent so conspicuously in the interest of his fellow citizens.

Theodor Benfey was born in Plymouth on June 11, 1871, the only child of Felix and Anna Schmidt Benfey. In 1877 the family moved to Sheboygan, the father having been elected county clerk. After graduating from the law department of the University of Wisconsin, young Theodor returned to Sheboygan and later joined his father in the law firm ever since known as Benfey & Benfey.

Theodor Benfey was the grandson and namesake of the man made famous by his knowledge of Sanskrit, Theodor Benfey, of Goettingen, Germany, whom to visit, in 1878, was the pleasure of ye editor. The ageing gentleman was interested in American affairs and social and economic conditions, and his wife, the grandmother of our Theo, was as interesting, spry and lively as any woman could be, and Theo's active life was a reflex of his wonderful grandmother.
