August Maffert 94 Years Young

Recently August Maffert celebrated his 94th birthday. He was a Union veteran of the Civil war, was born in Germany, and came to America with his parents, who settled in Town Wilson in 1853. He served in Company E, 127th Wisconsin Infantry, for three years, and as one of Lincoln's body guards he accompanied the martyred president from Washington to his last resting place in Springfield, Ill. In his declining years, Mr. Maffert lived with his son-in-law and his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Leick, 1423 S. Twelfth street. Mr. Maffert is a man of very cheerful disposition, and his war reminiscences are very interesting.
