Sheriff's Son Dies of Injury
Mark R. Frewert, 16-year-old son of Sheboygan County Sheriff and Mrs. Robert C. Frewert, succumbed early Sunday to
injuries sustained more than a month ago in a single car auto crash.
Their only son, he became the county's 11th traffic fatality of 1970 and the ninth person to die this year as a
result of single-vehicle road accidents.
On this date a year ago there had been 14 Sheboygan County traffic deaths. In all, 22 died in county mishaps in
1969.
Young Frewert of 1723 N. 17th St., had been listed in critical or serious condition at St. Nicholas Hospital since
the crash, at 1:10 a.m. on Saturday, June 27.
He was the driver of his father's 1969 Plymouth sport Fury which, while southbound on County Trunk LS at the
Playbird Road just north of Sheboygan, missed a curve and crashed.
A passenger, Joseph Schetter, 16, of 2322 North Ave., sustained less serious injuries.
Sheriff Frewert and his wife, Mary, maintain an almost constant vigil at their son's bedside since he was
hospitalized.
While the Frewert boy's death was attributed to severe internal injuries sustained in the crash, an autopsy was
to be conducted to determine the exact cause. His liver and kidneys were badly damaged.
Charged by sheriff's officers with driving too fast for conditions, young Frewert stipulated his guilt and paid
a $40 fine, plus court costs of $8.50.
A 21-year-old man was fined $200 and his 20-year-old companion was given a 30-day jail term for furnishing beer
for a party where the two boys reportedly obtained two six-packs which they consumed shortly before the crash.
Sheriff Frewert said today that there will be no funeral services but that a memorial scholarship fund is being
established in his son's name.
Friends wishing to contribute to it should send contributions to the Mark R. Frewert Memorial Scholarship Fund,
in care of the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office, Courthouse, Sheboygan.
