Edward A. Dow, Cashier of the State Bank of Plymouth, and President of the Phoenix Table Company, was born in Ottawa, Ill., April 1, 1853, and is a son of Joseph W. and Alice (Champney) Dow. (See sketch of the father elsewhere in this volume.) He was educated in the public schools of his native city, finishing in the High School.

On leaving school he served as Assistant Postmaster at Ottawa for a time, and then entered the bank of Dow & Tillson, later the First National Bank of Marseilles, where he served as clerk and Assistant Cashier, continuing that connection until early in 1873, when he removed to Sheboygan, Wis., and served as clerk and book-keeper in the First National Bank of that city until December 1 of that year, when he came to Plymouth. In the latter place he joined his father in establishing the present State Bank, under the firm name of Dow & Son, of which he was Cashier. On the 1st of October, 1890, they incorporated the bank under its present name of the State Bank, Mr. Dow, Sr., being President, and E. A. Dow, Cashier, since which time there has been no change in the official management of the bank.

In October, 1891, Mr. Dow, in company with others, incorporated the Phoenix Table Company of Plymouth, with a capital stock of $10,000, for the purpose of manufacturing extension tables and stands. The officers of the company are E. A. Dow, President; R. R. Shorer, Vice-President; and G. L. Gilman, Secretary and Treasurer. This company employs an average of twenty-five men, and has built up a prosperous and growing business.

On the 25th of December, 1876, Mr. Dow was married at Plymouth to Miss Ida J., a daughter of Robert H. Hotchkiss. Mrs. Dow was born in Plymouth, where her parents were among the early settlers. They have two children, a son, Robert W., aged twelve years; and a daughter, Margaret Louise, aged three years.

In politics, Mr. Dow is a Republican. He has been City Treasurer of Plymouth, and is now Alderman from the Second Ward. He is a member of Hiawatha Council; is Grand Regent of the Royal Arcanum; an Odd Fellow; a charter member of Plymouth Union No. 171; and also a member of Acassia Lodge No. 167, A. F. & A. M.

Mr. and Mrs. Dow are members of the Episcopal Church. Mr. Dow is recognized as one of the enterprising and successful business men of Plymouth, and has done much to aid in its development and prosperity.
