Albert J. Strassburger. Wisconsin is fortunate in the number and efficiency of her Normal Schools. Every year go out from these institutions a body of young men and woman thoroughly equipped as educators; and the high rank the public schools of the State have attained is due in a large degree to the effective work of these teachers, who have received thoroughly training by years of discipline for the important work of teaching.

The efficient superintendent of the schools of Sheboygan County, Albert J. Strassburger, graduated in the advanced course of the Oshkosh State Normal School, in the Class of `90. He is a representative of one of the pioneer families of Sheboygan County, and was born in the town of Herman, January 14, 1867. His father was Ernst Strassburger, who settled in that town in 1847. The latter was a native of Saxony, Germany, where he grew to manhood. Coming to the United States while still a young man, he came directly to Sheboygan County, where he settled on a farm of Government land, on which he ever afterward resided. About two years after his arrival he was united in marriage with Miss Johanna Bollman, a native of the same country as her husband.

Ernst Strassburger was an industrious and well-known citizen. His death occurred at the homestead in October, 1889. His wife died about six years before the demise of her husband. They were the parents of ten children, six sons and four daughters, all of whom are living, and all married but the youngest son. All are worthy citizens and useful members of society.

Albert J., the gentleman whose names heads this article, lived at home, working on the farm and attending the district school until he was sixteen years of age, when he became ambitious to secure better advantages for an education than the common schools afford; in fact, he determined to qualify himself for a teacher. Accordingly, he entered the Oshkosh Normal School, where he remained two years. In order to secure the means to enable him to complete his course at the Normal, he engaged in teaching for one year, and then returned to school for a year, completing the elementary course. He again engaged in teaching, this time for two years, his field of labor being in Manitowoc County. On returning to Oshkosh, he finished the advanced course, graduating, as stated, in 1890. On the completion of his Normal course, Mr. Strassburger assumed the principalship of the High School at Glenbeulah, where he remained two years. At the end of that time he accepted the nomination for County Superintendent, to which position he was elected, succeeding Martin Hughes.

Mr. Strassburger was married June 26, 1893, to Miss Sarah Brunette, daughter of Manuel Brunette, of Green Bay, Wis., where Mrs. Strassburger was born August 28, 1871.

The school at Glenbeulah, under the principalship of Mr. Strassburger, advanced to the front rank of schools of its class in the county. The experience and qualifications that he brings to the office of Superintendent are a guarantee that the schools of the county will attain to greater efficiency under his supervision.
