Charles U. Boley, City Engineer of Sheboygan, has served in that capacity since July, 1888. He was appointed in September of that year to succeed S. A. Simpson, resigned, and has received the appointment each successive year since that time. Mr. Boley was born in Canfield, Mahoning County, Ohio, September 12, 1854. His father, William Boley, was a native of Pennsylvania, born February 12, 1817, removing thence to Ohio.

Charles attended the common schools for some timein his native place. When fourteen years of age, he went to Washington County, Wis., to reside with a maternal uncle, and there attended school and acquired sufficient knowledge to enable him to engage in teaching, which occupation he followed for a number of terms. He then made special preparation for the business of civil engineering, graduating from that department in the Wisconsin State University, with the class of '83. After his graduation he taught for the period of one year at Alderly, Wis., and thence went to Georgetown, Colo., where he resumed teaching, which he continued a year. Returning to Wisconsin, he was married, April 8, 1885, to Miss Lucy Beeckler, of the town of Lyndon, Sheboygan County. Mrs. Boley is a daughter of Alexander Beeckler, a pioneer of Sheboygan County. Mr. Beeckler died February 24, 1893, having attained to the advanced age of eighty years. The wife and mother died many years ago. Mrs. Boley was born in the town of Lyndon, February 18, 1856.

After their marriage, Mr. Boley taught in the High School at Hartford for three years, at the expiration of that time going to Sheboygan. Mr. and Mrs. Boley have one son, Arthur L., born June 5, 1886.

Mr. Boley was one of a family of eight children, two of whom are deceased. A sister, Mrs. Mary Brasure, is a resident of Washington County; a brother, Archibald E., was for a number of years a well-known citizen of La Crosse. He died several years ago, leaving a family consisting of a wife and two children. Except Mr. Boley, These are the only members of his family who are residents of Wisconsin.

Mr. Boley is a gentleman of culture, and possesses a thorough knowledge of civil engineering. As a citizen he is respected and esteemed for his enterprise and public spirit.
