Charles H. Halbach, a photographer of Sheboygan, started business in this city in 1882. He was bora in the village of Howard's Grove, Sheboygan County, October 16, 1861, and is a son of William and Amalia (Mennenoeh) Halbach. His parents were born in Rhenish-Prussia, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1847. After spending a year in Milwaukee, he came to Sheboygan County, settling in Howard's Grove, in the township of Herman. The father was engaged in farming up to 1852, when he came to Sheboygan, where he carried on a blacksmith shop for two years. In 1854 he returned to Howard's Grove, where he was employed as engineer and foreman of a sawmill. From 1856 to 1879, he was engaged in general merchandising, and from 1866 to 1873 also conducted a sawmill, in company with Henry Mueller. He was Postmaster at Howard's Grove for six years, and also Town Clerk and Justice of the Peace for six years. In 1879, he removed to Sheboygan, where, after a year with the Garton Toy Company, he lived retired until his death, which occurred January 20, 1888. He was born June 10, 1821, and was married in 1846 to Amalia Mennenoeh, who died in 1887. Their family consisted of seven children. William is a jeweler of Victoria, Tex.; Albert runs a machine-shop in Ft. Howard, Wis.; Lucy married William Wolff, of Sheboygan Falls; Bertha is deceased; Laura is the wife of Christ Otten, of Sheboygan; Charles H. is he of whom we write; and Rudolph is foreman in a machine-shop in Cleveland, Ohio.

Charles H., the subject of this sketch, spent his childhood and youth in his native town, where he attended school until the age of sixteen. He then went to Minneapolis, where he learned photography. At the age of eighteen, he opened a gallery at Clear Lake, Wis., and continued there until 1882, when he opened his present gallery at Sheboygan.

Mr. Halbach was married in the Chair City, September 22, 1886, to Miss Fannie Lintz. Mrs. Halbach was born in Sheboygan, and is a daughter of F. G. and Annie M. Lintz. (See sketch of her parents elsewhere in this work.) Three children, two sons and one daughter, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Halbach, William C., Elsie and Frederick G., all natives of Sheboygan.

In politics, our subject is a Republican. Socially he is a member of the Knights of Maccabees, Jonathan Tent No. 16; he is also a Mason of the rank of Mark Master, a member of Sheboygan Lodge No. 11.
