Frederick John Arpke is the efficient miller at Franklin, which is the place of his nativity. He was born February 5, 1859, being a son of C. F. Arpke, whose sketch is given elsewhere in this volume. After attending the common schools, the gentleman whose name heads this article completed his education in the Mission House, one of the best schools in this part of the State.

When seventeen years of age, Mr. Arpke commenced to learn the miller's trade in his father's mill, and with the exception of one year spent in Dundee, Wis., he has been connected therewith ever since. An aptitude for the business and long experience have made him a competent miller. For many years he has had entire charge of the mill, conducting it in a most satisfactory manner.

Mr. Arpke was married in Herman Township, November 16, 1883, to Miss Mary Humke, a daughter of Mrs. Caroline Humke, of Franklin, who is one of the two survivors of the heads of families that came from Lippe-Detmold and settled in Herman Township in 1847. Mrs. Arpke is a native of Sheboygan County. Unto our subject and his wife have been born two children, Henry and Calvin. Both parents are members of the Reformed Church, and, in politics, Mr. Arpke is a Republican, though not an aspirant for official positions.

This county has been the home of our subject all his life; his business has brought him in contact with the people throughout this section of the State, and his fair dealing and courteous treatment of customers have secured a liberal patronage for the establishment he represents.
