James Hughes

Source: "Portrait and Biographical Record - Published 1894 by Excelsior Publishing Co., Chicago" Pages 274 - 275

James Hughes, a representative of a well known family of the town of Mitchell, resides on section 12. In 1849 his parents, James and Catherine {Hale} Hughes, and their four children, three sons and a daughter, became residents of Sheboygan County. The family emigrated to the United States in 1846, and, landing at Boston, Mass., remained in New England until 1849. The parents were advanced in years when they came to Wisconsin, and therefore made their home with their children during the remaining years of their lives. The death of the father occurred in 1864, and that of the mother on the 9th of May, 1863. The eldest of their family, Bridget, who was married and had a family, died in Ireland before her people emigrated to America; John, a resident of the town of Mitchell, is the eldest of the three brothers who came with the parents to the United States; Philip, the second, died in Mitchell Township may years ago; James is the youngest of the sons; and the sister, Mary, is unmarried.

James Hughes, whose name heads this record, was born in County Mayo, Ireland, of which place the remainder of the children were also natives. Soon after coming to Wisconsin, he and his brother Philip entered two hundred and forty acres of land, located in Brown County, which he exchanged for his parents farm, on which he has resided since 1853.

December 12, 1861, was the date of Mr. Hughes marriage to a daughter of Manley Dominick. She was born in Ireland, and came to this country about the same time that her husband and his father's family came. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes are numbered among the substantial citizens of the town of Mitchell, there they have resided for forty years.
