Observe Golden Anniversary
A two-day celebration of the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Gartman
commenced on Sunday when approximately 150 relatives and friends were
entertained at the open house held at their home, 1010 N. Ninth street,
continued this morning, the anniversary of the wedding, with a high mass at
Holy Name church at 8 o'clock, and was concluded with a dinner at 12:30 p.m.
today at the Grand Hotel to about 50 guests.
Many bouquets of flowers decorated the home Sunday for the first event in the
combined celebration. Interspersing the colorful arrangements of flowers in
many varieties were lighted candles. Between the hours of 2 and 5 in the
afternoon and 7 and 9 in the evening, visitors came constantly.
The high mass this morning was celebrated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Phillipp Dreis.
Easter lilies adorned the altar. Present at the ceremony were the best man
and bridesmaid of 50 years ago, A. C. Gartman and Mrs. D. F. Mayer, Holy
Cross. Miss Evelyn Kellner was the soloist for the mass and sang several
selections. The mass was attended by the members of the immediate family.
The golden theme was carried out in the centerpiece of 50 Duesberg roses,
which with two wedding cakes provided an attractive table setting for the
dinner this noon. Out-of-town guests attending it were Mr. Mayer, Mrs.
Joseph Hiltgen of Fredonia, Mr. and Mrs. George Thull and two sons, Donald
and Wesley, of Detroit, Mich.
Mr. Gartman was born in the town of Wilson on May 14, 1864, and his wife, nee
Helen Wolf, was born in Holy Cross in the town of Belgium, on Feb. 22, 1869.
The couple was married at Holy Cross on April 21, 1891, by the Rev. Welbes.
Until 1913, when they moved to Sheboygan, they resided at Weeden, where Mr.
Gartman owned and operated a cheese factory. Their present home has always
been their residence in this city.
Their seven children were all present for the anniversary. They are Mrs.
John (Katherine) Mersberger, Mrs. George (Henrietta) Hammes, Mrs. Roy
(Madeline) Head, Walter F., Louis H., and Dr. William J., all of Sheboygan,
and Mrs. George (Leona) Thull of Detroit, Mich.
