Named for the large Menominee Tribe Settlement which originally was on the site of the present day City of Oconto. It was the home base and winter quarters for the tribe as well as the major trading depot for commerce with other tribes, such as the Chippewa, Potowatomi, and Fox on the extensive network that existed prior to white settlement. The Menominee were widely known as experts in the gathering and preservation of foods such as fish, rice, fowl, smoked meats, and maple sugar, and the crafting of storage vessels made of leather, reeds, and birchbark.
