A large number of immigrant families first settled the northeastern part of Oconto County as logging gave way to farming. Primarily from Sweden, these families developed a settlement area called Swedetown. Such surnames as Norens, Johnson, Mehlberg, Anderson, Nelson, Fosberg, and Lindgrens populated the area. Fishing, brought with them from the "old country", was also a common occupation among the residents.
