THE 1900 FEDERAL CENSUS
FOR THE TOWN OF HOW

The following pages contain the 1900 Federal Census Returns for the town of How. This census was taken by Herman Hankwitz, a German born merchant from Hayes, and it may be his German birth that accounts for the many incorrect spellings. I have taken the liberty of correcting some of the obvious errors if I knew the family. As an example, my maternal grandfather Leonard Johnson was recorded by Hankwitz as Lenorthi his sister Gladys as Gladus and Myrtle as Myrthel. Hankwitz also spelled Alice incorrectly throughout the census, writing Alus,Allus,Alyes and Alis. Subsequently, when you find your ancestor or relative with a spelling error, try and contact the late Herman Hankwitz, not me.

Should you care to examine this census yourself you will find that my family/dwelling number will not always correspond with that found on the original. Hankwitz erred here too, then wrote over the original trying to correct it. This often left the microfilmed copy that I used difficult or impossible to read. Rather than re-number the entire cens 'us I start with the same number used in 1900. Family/dwelling begins with number 157 and ends with number 309.

You will notice a heading C/S. This stands for child statistics. A mother was asked in this census how many children she had given birth to and how many of them were still living. The first number represents the number born and the second number represents the number still living.
