Personal Mention Column
T.W. BROWNELL of the town of How has been engaged to teach the school the coming winter in school district no. 2 in his township.
Frank DOWEN, one of the squarest men in the town of How, was in the city earlier this week. A short call at the Reporter office is appreciated.
Julius SURING of the Town of How was in this city on business the middle-of
the week.
Henry JOHNSON, treasurer of the town of How was in the city on Thursday.
By the way, the people of his township are talking about electing him as
a member of the county board next year. Julius SURING says: "That Mr. J.
is the best man in the township for the office."
HOW HOWLINGS
December 27, 1884
News with us is about as scarce as hen's teeth, but everything seems
to be moving along in a quiet way. This town at the last general election
adopted the town system of school government and have organized by elective
J. SURING as president, Mr. FRANK,vice president and J.M. ARMSTRONG as
secretary.
J.A. KRUSE has moved up to his camps, 7 miles above P. DELANEY's where
he is prepared to entertain the traveling public and to do a nice business
lumbering.
A young child of Jacob HOULE was buried a few days ago. We did not
learn the disease of which it died.
Peter JOHNSON, a brother of our worthy town treasurer, had a very narrow
escape from death a few days ago. While at work in the woods a large limb
fell and just brushed his head and arm, taking off some of the skin, but
not so as to seriously injure him.
Henry JOHNSON has taken possession of the tax roll and is off on a
collecting trip, and some of our citizens are as yet undecided whether
they will pay their taxes or let him have their property.

HOW HOWLINGS
Although it is said to be hard times, yet we would hardly know it here
in the back woods if we did not hear so much said about it. Our community
seems to be healthy, happy and prosperous. The farmers are getting in their
crops and making improvements. Mr. Henry JOHNSON has a nice large frame
barn nearly completed, and others are preparing to follow suit.
Mr. BREED of town 30, 17 shot and killed a large bear a few days since.
We were informed that it weighed 500 pounds. Louis SURING had a hog killed
by one of the same family (not the BREED family, but one of the bruin family.)
J. SURING has been raising up his mill and putting in a line shaft
and is about ready for business.
Our merchants seem to be doing a good business. Three schools are in
full blast, No. 1 taught by Mrs. L.S. WILTON, #2 by Miss Emma KELLY and
#3, Master Willie COUCH; all is well and giving satisfaction. We have a
Sabbath school every Sabbath and preaching every other week by Rev. Mr.
COUCH.
