St Peters School is at the left rear. It had been newly built in 1887. It replaced and earlier school-hall building from 1862. This original church building, built 1857, was replaced in 1895. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Landmark Due To Disappear
Oconto - An Oconto landmark - St. Peter's grade school of 1887 vintage - is destined to disappear with the completion of a new grade school building on Brazeau Ave. adjacent to the present school and convent. The goal for completion of the new six-room school building has been set for late October and the present building will give way for a playground and parking area for members of the parish on Sundays. The present school was completed in March of 1887 at a cost of $5,806 including furnishings. The Rev. Abner Laquc, St. Peter's pastor, said the cost of the new school and convent will be approximately $141,143.85 not including furnishings or architect fees. * * *
Father
Laquc, who broke ground for the new structure Saturday, said
the
school building in addition to six classrooms will include an office,
first aid room, visitor's room, furnace room and a custodian's room. It
will be a one story structure of cement blocks faced with bricks.
The new convent, a separate building, will be large enough to accommodate six teaching nuns of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet who supply the faculty members. The convent will be a brick veneer structure with its own heating system. The general construction contract for both buildings went to Frank O. Zeise Construction Co. of Green Bay at figure of $82, 963. Tweet Brothers of Green Bay have the heating c contract for the school at $15,955 and the heating system for the convent will be installed by Greg Engobos and Sons of Green Bay at a cost of $4,061. * * *
Krakow
Hardware Co. of Krakow has the plumbing contract for both buildings at
a cost of $10,996. Electrical work was awarded to Oconto
Electric
at a figure of $9, 600 and the general hardware contract went to
LaForce Builders Hardware of Green bay for $1395. Asa D.
Foster of
Little Suamico had the contract for fill at the location for $6,195,.65.
Oliver J. Herrick of Green Bay is the architect. Members of the parish who assisted in the planning of the two buildings included Clifford Noel, Richard Richter, Clifford Mineau, Wilber Drolette, George Kelm, William F. Trepanier, Francis Hoppe, Eingelbert Picard, Louis Plude, Joseph Aubry, Joseph Huisman, Author O'Neil and Alfred Merline. |
