Like a fading memory, the abandoned Stiles Junction Station sat beside the rusting tracks.  Photographed in 1999 at sunset, using a flash, the old railroad station sign glowed brightly, reminiscent of the energy hundreds of past  passengers had. Those people waited to board or step off the cars, at a time when the railroad was a shining ticket to places near and far, traveled the rails for several busy decades. By the mid 1880's the Wisconsin & Northern Line, and others, were well established and serviced the many passengers until 1910 when the last sawmill closed and brought a gradual decline in use. Besides playing host to the many people coming to settle in Oconto County, working the saw mills, loggers coming in from the winter woods, people leaving to visit others all over the country, and moving to new homes elsewhere, Stiles Junction had it's own moments in history.

The year 1895 was particularly hard on various male passengers, both sober and "under the influence", as several were severely injured or killed leaving trains. In 1927 the door was forced open by three thugs "in a high powered car". The robbers made off with a total of  9 cents.

There were also  many happy reunions and tearful, heartbreaking good byes that were remembered only by the ones who were present at the station years ago.
