Funeral rites will be conducted at St. Johns Lutheran church Saturday afternoon for Dr. W. R. Berg of Gillett, who passed away following a heart attack on Monday morning. Dr. Berg was 57 years of age and had practiced in this community for the past 27 years. The doctor had not been active for the past year as he had not fully recovered from injuries suffered lst November when his car went out of control on a slippery road and crashed into a tree.

The remains are at the Kuehl funeral home and will lie in state until Saturday when they will be taken to the church where they may be viewed until the hour of services at 2 pm. Burial will take place in Wanderers Rest cemetery, the Krause-Simpson Post of the American Legion conducting military rites.

Dr. Berg was born on February 27, 1895 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from Humboldt High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota, and on March 16, 1918 enlisted, serving in the medical evacuation hospital no. 10 in France with the American forces during World War 1. He returned home July 7, 1919 and resumed his medical course at Marquette University at Milwaukee where he graduated in June of 1925. He served his internship in Bellin Memorial hospital after which he began practice in Gillett. He was married in 1928 to the former Miss Viola Holz of Green Bay, who survives. He is further survived by two daughters, Betty, Mrs. Dale Drew of Detroit; Rita Mae at Menasha; a son Richard who is studying at the Wisconsin State College at Platteville, one grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Sherman of Bancroft, and Mrs. Oscar Schack of Lemon Grove, California. Three brothers preceded him in death. Dr. Berg is a past president of the Oconto county Medical society, holding the office for eight years, and also a member of the state medical society. He served as surgeon for the railroad for many years.

The doctor was an active participating member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic lodge and the Gillett Civic Club. He was Service Officer for the Krause-Simpson Post of the American Legion. The doctor made a remarkable recovery at first from the injuries suffered in the accident which took plane on November 26, 1951. He did not recover sufficiently to resume his practice, but his death was not anticipated by the community and the news on Monday came as a shock to the many friends of the Berg family. The family has the sincere sympathy of all in these days of sorrow and grief.
