Veteran Pioneer Dies
William J. Classon, Sr., Passed Away Last Friday
County Resident 45 Years
In Mercantile Business Here Nearly Thirty Years - Funeral From Late Home Sunday

William J. Classon, and old and highly respected pioneer citizen of Oconto county and city, died at his home at 3:30 last Friday morning of general debility, after an illness of about six weeks.

Deceased was born in Canada July 7, 1833. July 7, 1857 he was married in Manitowoc to Adeline Leger. In 1868 he came to Oconto county and settled on a farm, where he remained until 1884, when he came to the city and engaged in the mercantile business which continued until his last illness.

September 17, 1864, he enlisted at Manitowoc in Co., K., 27th Reg. Wis. V. I. and joined his regiment in Little Rock, Ark., in February 1865. He went with his regiment to New Orleans and Mobile.

He was first in action at Spanish Fort where he passed through the seige. He reached Fort Blakely with is regiment in time to see the capitulation, thense preceded up the Tombigbee river and engaged in building fortifications. When Taylor surrendered his regiment went to Baros, Santiago, Clarksville, and Brownsville Tex. where they were mustered out. He is survived by his wife and five sons, George W., Edmund L., William J., David G. and Allan V.. The funeral was held from his late home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Norman Cawley officiating, and his remains laid at rest in Evergreen Cemetery.
