Walter Bent, 49, for years a prominent contractor in Vilas county logging, and road building work, lost his life at about 8 o'clock this (Thursday) morning in a terrific dynamite explosion at Forest Lake, a few miles southwest of Land 'o' Lakes, where he was completing a road contract started last fall.

Details of the accident are meager at this time, only one man being near him when the explosion took place. It is known that a full box of dynamite was standing on a stump where the accident occurred. What caused the explosion will undoubtedly never be known.

The injured man was terribly mutilated by the force of the explosion, but was partly conscious when picked up by members of his crew. He was rushed to Eagle River, but died on the way before reaching here.

Walter Bent was born at Abrams, Town of Pensaukee, Wisconsin, Aug. 31, 1878. He had been a resident of this section for 35 years, the last several years at Eagle River. His work as logging and road contractor made him widely known throughout this part of the state.

He is survived by a wife, a daughter Lucy Ann, and four sons: Harold, a student at Lawrence College, Appleton; Ronald a Normal school student at Oshkosh; Arthur, who was with him at the road camp; and Leo at home. Three brothers and a sister also survive, George, of Latona Beach; Charles of Land 'o' Lakes, Wis., Edward of Abrams, Wis., and Mrs Ella Radcliffe of Waukegan, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held from the home at Main St.., Saturday afternoon at 2:30.

This terrible accident brings forth expressions of deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
