Pioneer of Oconto County Dies
Thomas Leigh Found Dead in Bed Saturday Morning

Resident County 55 Years
Respected Resident Town of Stiles of Which Elected Treasurer 36 Consecutive Years

A highly respected citizen and for more than half a century a resident of the town of Stiles, passed away about 6:30 last Saturday morning of heart failure and old age.

Not far from six o'clock members of the family heard him moving about his room, but about 6:30 as the family was about to sit down to breakfast, one of his daughters remarked that he was late in getting up and his daughter, Mrs. Ida Hill, stepped into his room to call him and spoke his name. She believes he breathed once or twice after she went to him but cannot be certain of this.

Deceased was born in County Kildare, Ireland in 1831 and in 1838 came to this country and lived in the state of Maine until he was married to Miss Isabelle Maker in 1855. That year he came to Milwaukee where he remained until the next year, 1856, when he came to Oconto County and settled in the town of Stiles where he resided more than 55 years. He was at first employed about his brothers mill, as foreman for the Diamond Match Co. for a time and at other work but for a number of years had confined his activities to his farm.

His wife died a number of years ago but four daughters, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) McAllister, Mrs. Ida Hill and Miss Beatrice of the town of Stiles and Mrs. Bessie Hill of Brainard, Minn. and four sons, John R. and Charles of Stiles and Thomas and Harry of Brainard, survive to mourn his sudden departure. A brother in Green Lake and two sisters, one in Gladstone, Mich. and the other in Independence, Iowa also survive him. The esteem and confidence in which he was held by his fellow townsmen is shown by the fact that for 36 consecutive years they elected him town treasurer until he declined to again accept it.

The funeral was held from his late home at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Fr. Campbell officiating and his remains laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery, Oconto.
