BROOKSIDE MAN, VICTIM GUNMAN'S FIRE, DIES TUESDAY
RICHARD DARR, 48, SHOT SATURDAY NIGHT
BY NEW YORK THUG IN GREEN BAY;
RITES FRIDAY

Richard Darr, 48, of Brookside, innocent victim of a New York gunman's fire during an altercation in a Green Bay tavern Saturday night, died at seven o'clock Tuesday night in a Green Bay hospital as the result of his wounds. The gunman, Frank Alby, jr., 29, is being held on a murder charge.

Funeral services for the deceased will be held Friday at his home at R1 Abrams, Rev. Paul Egger officiating, and burial will be in the Brookside cemetery.

Darr had entered the tavern a short time before Alby ordered another custom, Gordon Ziebarth, to the center of the room at gunpoint, and demanded other customers remain where they were. Relatives here said Darr was hard of hearing, and probably hadn't heard the gunman's order. At about that time, Darr left his position near the center of the bar, and started to walk to the washroom, which was in Alby's general direction.

Alby later told police he fired once to scare Darr, but that bullet hit Darr's shoulder. When Darr kept on coming, Alby fired a second time at close range, the bullet tearing through his victim's abdomen inflicting the wounds which brought is death three days later. Darr still continued to walk in the washroom, where he collapsed.

The gunman rushed out of the back door of the tavern, located at 426 Mains St., in Green Bay, and was picked up the following morning at his rooming house. He told authorities he thought that Ziebarth was a man he had known as "Carlo", whom Alby said had beaten him out of $6000. He said he shot Darr because he though he was going to interfere. Darr was employed at the Northern Paper Mills, in Green Bay.

The deceased is survived by his father, Emil Darr, Brookside; two brothers, Arthur at home and William, Little Suamico; one sister, Mrs. Henry Jahnke, Green Bay.

He was born in Brookside, and lived there most of his life, engaging in farming until about two years ago when he started working in Green Bay. Pallbearers for the services Friday, while will be held at one o'clock, are Lawrence and Leland Darr, Glen Mocco, Edwin, Norman and Richard Jahnke. Those in charge of the flowers will be Mrs. Lawrence Darr, Phyllis Darr, Mrs. Earl Jahnke, Mrs. Ellis Jahnke, Mrs. Glen Mocco and Mrs Ricard Jahnke.
