Mike ZIEREIS

Death claimed Oconto county's oldest citizen and one of the state's
oldest residents Thursday morning. He was Mike Ziereis, 311 Second
Street, who was 101 years old February 2nd. Death came unexpectedly
after he had arisen as usual. 

Mr. Ziereis was born in Bavaria, Germany, February 2, 1856. He came to
this country at the age of 38 and settled in Oconto County. For many
years he was employed in the woods by the Holt Lumber Company, as a
lumberjack, later as a cookie, and in later years as a watchman.
He never married. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States,
June 11, 1921.

Resolutions honoring him as one of the oldest residents on his birthday
the past two years were submitted to the State Legislature by Senator
Reuben LaFave.

He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph.
Survivors include two nieces, Mrs.Ray (Katheryn) Wochinski of New
London, and Mrs. Anna (Christ) Quandt, Suring; and four nephews, Mike
and Joseph of Suring; George of Sturgeon Bay, and Edward of
Clintonville.

The body was taken to the Sheffeild Funeral Home where services were
conducted Saturday morning at 8:30 followed by rites at St. Joseph
Church at 9:00. The Rev. Robert Klein officiated and burial was in the
Catholic Cemetery.

The rosary was recited Friday evening at the Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Robert Frewerd, Fran Lobarger, George Frewerd, Charles
Petersen, and George Perdzock.
