Matthias PHILIPPI

October 7, 1904

HAYES - Matthias Philippi died October 7, 1904 at his homestead in Town of How, Oconto County. He was born November 3, 1830, in Heckenbach, Rheinland, Prussia to Johannes Appolinarus and Anna (Philipsen) Philippi. His mother died when Matthias was age three. He and two sisters, Barbara and Maria, were raised by his father and step-mother Elizabeth (Schaut) who was his mother's first cousin.

On June 28, 1856, Matthias married Gertude Lambertz in Neiderhechenbach. Gertrude died in 1877. She had given birth to 7 children.

Matthias' second marriage was to Christina (Brust) Muller on November 7, 1878, in Hechenbach. She was the widow of Johannes Muller, who had died in 1876. He had three children.

Matthias owned a farm near Hechenbach as well as a brewery, blacksmith shop, and inn. In 1883 he emigrated to Wisconsin by way of the Port of New York. The family first ran a farm in Town of Humboldt, Brown County, then purchased a farm in Town of How, Oconto County, in 1893. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Keshena.

Matthias is survived by his wife, Christina; sons (first marriage) Johann, Matthias, Antone, (second marriage) Joseph, John A., Peter; daughters (first marriage) Cathrine, Elizabeth (both remained in Europe), (second marriage) Anna Christina (Mrs.Holl); step-children John Miller, Margaret (Mrs. Anton Otradovec), Catherine (Sr, Stephana OSF); half brother Peter, John, and Joseph; half-sisters Anna and Gertude. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife and infant son Joannes; daughter Mary Ann in 1894(second marriage); sister Barbara (Mrs. John) Schmitt. Friends may call at the family home until November 5. Funeral Mass will be at St. Michael Catholic Church in Keshena with burial following at Catholic Cemetery in Town of How.
