Marie (Mathis) Scherer, 93, Gillett, died on March 3, 2002. She was born May 20, 1908 in Illinois to the late John and Cleona (Pearce) Jones. Marie graduated from Wausaukee High School and Marinette Normal Teachers College, later teaching at Athelstane. She raised three foster children Dianne, David, Randy Stone. Marie helped to see that over the years both Churches were built. She was always making sacrifices to help other people, caring for many people in their own homes. Marie had been employed at the Gillett Nursing Home. She was a Charter Member of Hillside Assembly of God, and also a Sunday School Teacher. She had been married to Ogden Mathis; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Scherer, State of Oregon; her daughter, Alice Tilus of Minnesota; her five sons Charles Mathis of Gillett, Fred Mathis of Oregon, John Mathis of Florida, Rodney Mathis of Arizona, Phillipp Mathis of Oregon; her sister, Joyce Iwig of Kansas; her four brothers Delbert Jones or Oregon, Bryan Jones of Gillett, Earl Jones of Oregon, Wilber Jones of Oregon; 21 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by three sisters Thelma Flom, Florence Coons, and Ruth Nathan; also three brothers Frank Jones, Worth Jones, and Harold Jones.

Visitation was held at Hillside Assembly of God Church in Gillett on Friday, March 8, beginning at 2 p.m. Funeral services were held 4 p.m. Friday at Church with Pastor Paul Carlson officiating. Burial in Wanders Rest Cemetery, Gillett. Gruetzmacher Funeral Home, Suring, in charge of arrangements.
