Melvin L. Scheer
Melvin L. Scheer, age 80 of Suring, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at Woodland Village Nursing Home. Melvin was born December 31, 1935 to the late Hubert and Emma (Donath) Scheer. He graduated from Suring High School with the Class of 1953. He married Eleanor Schuettpelz on September 16, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hayes and they enjoyed 54 happy years together. Melvin worked as an auto mechanic for many years, working at Elfe’s Garage, Larry’s Garage, and Suring Co-op/Bay Lakes before moving to Even-Flo working in the parts room. Melvin was also an active member on the Town of How Board for over 30 years, serving as Town Clerk and Town Supervisor. He is a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hayes where he had served on the church board.
Melvin was preparing to retire in 2001 when he suffered a stroke that largely paralyzed his right side and affected his speech. His tenacious embrace of life in the succeeding years inspired all who knew him.
Melvin loved to hunt and also enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and fixing his tractor. In his retirement he enjoyed bingo, word searches, puzzles, and following the Packers and Brewers. His biggest passion was making maple syrup on the land. He loved when the sap was being cooked down because he had plenty of time to visit, play cards, and tell stories with many of his family and friends.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Eleanor; 1 son, Scott (Kim) Scheer of Appleton; 2 daughters, Carmen (Dan) Strauss of Shawano and Carla Christie of Hortonville; 1 sister, Dolores (Arnie) Schneider of Eagle River; 3 granddaughters, Stephanie, Katie, and Emma. He is further survived by many brothers/sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Buchholz and brother-in-law, Harley Buchholz.
Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church in Hayes on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 9 am until the funeral service at 11 am with Pastor Nick Buchholz officiating. Melvin will be interred at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hayes.
