Mr. and Mrs. DeLano were among the very first settlers in this locality, being preceded by the brothers of Mr. DeLano. For many long weary years, Mrs. DeLano had been an invalid, confined to the house, and a greater share of the time to her room. During the long period of her invalidism she manifested a degree of patience and endurance seldom seen in so great a sufferer. Every means were used which money and the entire devotion and loving kindness of her family could procure to alleviate pain and smooth the tiresome journey to the “beyond”.She said she longed to go, and requested her daughter to dress in white if her release came in summer. “Let no tears be shed; all I ask is to go to sleep and wake in the summer land.” The request was granted. On the morning of the 29th, she said to her daughter, “Leave me now to sleep three quarters of an hour and do not come into the room.”

When the time expired, not hearing the little call bell, Miss Hattie went into the room and found her mother precisely as she had left her, but she had found her long sought home. Her earth life was pure and painful, her death was painless and beautiful. The funeral services were  held in the home parlors. Beautiful selections from the “Spiritual Harp” were sung by the choir, prayer by the Methodist clergyman, a poem entitled “Mother is Resting”, selected by Mrs. DeLano for the occasion, was read by Mrs. Laura DeLano, sister-in-law of the deceased, in clear calm tones which made the poem doubly impressive and beautiful. Black crape or sable garments were not seen, but professions of beautiful flowers were placed by loving hands instead. Rare, choice offerings by Mrs. Manning and Mrs. Henry Volk, of OcontoFalls, by Mrs. J.L. Bovee, of Abrams and a pillow of rare exotics, with “Rest” in the center, by Mrs. E.C. Beebe, of Brookside. Mr. DeLano and his two daughters, Miss Hattie Mae and Mrs. Laura T. Volk, are the only surviving members of the family.
