Many Years of Long
Life in Oconto

Mrs. Mary Cardinal, 98, a resident of Oconto for many years, passed away at 2:30 Monday morning, December 2, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.A. Clark, at Two Rivers. The body was brought to Oconto at 2 o'clock Tuesdau afternoon, being taken to the Chester Cardinal hone, 114 First street, where it remained until the time of the funeral.

 Thr Rev. D.T. Stannard officiated at the services at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the First Methodist Episcopal church and burial was in the family lot in the Evergreen cemetery.

 The pallbearers, now men who were all boys in the neighborhood when Mrs. Cardinal lived in the city were; John Youngs, William Mehlberg, Louis Grunert, Spencer Crane, Edward Krueger and Wm. Phillips.

 Mary Ann Johnston was born April 10, 1842 at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo. She traveled from Jefferson Barracks to Green Bay in a covered wagon, crossing the Fox river on a Ferry, at the age of six years. She lived in Green Bay with her parents until her marriage to Joseph Cardinal 76 years ago last July. They were in the city for 25 years, then came to Oconto where they lived up to the time of Mr. Cardinal's death 22 years ago. Mrs. Cardinal has been making her home with her children for the past twenty years.

 Mrs. Cardinal's parents were married at old Fort Howard. Her father was a drill sergeant in the regular army, serving in the Mexican American War and the Civil War. He had operated a brick yard in Green Bay and DePere for many years and many of the old brick buildings still standing today in Green Bay are buildings built from the brick made by him.

 Mrs. Cardinal could relate many interesting historic events diring her life and made a visit the most interesting. She had made three trips to Washington during her lige for visits with her children. Mrs. Cardinal was a charter member of the G.A.R. and had been a member of the M.E. church of Oconto for many years.

 Survivors are the following children; Mrs. A. Frye and Mrs R.L. Clark of Spokane, Wash.; S.J. Cardinal of Ladysmith; G. H. Cardinal of Green Bay; Mrs L.A. Clark of Two Rivers; A.C. Carinal and C.E. Cardinal, both of Oconto; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Miller of Green Bay and a brother, George Johnston, Green Bay; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

 The people from out-of-town attending the funeral included Geo. Johnston and daughter, Mavel, Mr. and Mrs. Al Martens, Mrs Mae Wolfile, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Johnston, Mrs. Frank Haden, Mrs. August Strahl, Rev. and Mrs. Sheard and Mr. and Mrs. G.H. Cardinal, all of Green Bay; Mr. and Mrs L.A. Clark.
