Marie L. Hohn DARROW

Marie L. Darrow, 89, Gillett, died Monday morning, February 21, 2000, at Bellin Memorial Hospital, Green Bay, following a short illness.

She was born August 19, 1910, in Gresham, to the late Herman C. and Amy (Boyden) Hohn.

On June 25, 1938, Marie married Wesley R. Darrow in Gillett. Together, the couple owned and operated the former Darrow Furniture Store, Gillett, for 22 years. Mr. Darrow preceded her in death June 25, 1990. Marie taught elementary school in Fond du Lac for nine years. She was a substitute teacher at the Gillett Elementary School for a number of years. She was a member of Tabor United Methodist Church, Gillett. Marie loved to write. She wrote numerous articles, which were published in various newspapers and magazines, including the Reader's Digest. She had written the history of Gillett. In 1998, Marie received an award from the Oconto County Historical Society, for her contribution to the preservation of the history of Oconto County. She wrote various newspaper articles for the Gillett Public Library Building fund-raiser and was involved with teen groups in the community. She was a passionate Bridge player, an avid reader and loved to travel. Marie never stopped teaching people who wanted to learn from her.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Ann, DePere; her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Dale Johnson, Green Bay; her granddaughters, Alissa Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, Erica Johnson, all of Green Bay; Amy Darrow and her fiance Richard Mangin, Amanda Darrow, all of DePere; her great-grandchildren, Ashley and Wesley Johnson; two nephews; one niece, and one special grand-nephew, Paul Cota, Krakow.

Marie was also preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Ted Cota; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.

The Darrow family received relatives and friends at Tabor United Methodist Church, Gillett, Saturday after 10 a.m. Memorial Services were 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2000, at the church with Pastor Skip Robertson officiating. Interment in Wanderers Rest Cemetery, Gillett. The Kuehl Funeral Home, Gillett, assisted the family with arrangements.
