Mary Agnes Starr, 97, of Fondulac, died September 27, 1999 at St. Francis Home there. Mary was born April 29, 1902 in Oconto, WI, to Edward and Elizabeth LeRue Barber. In 1920 she married Albert Robert Wittock. He preceded her in death. In 1937 she married Morton Hull Starr. He also preceded her in death. Mary began as a rural school teacher. She then was a Sorority House Mother for students at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and also for a time at University of Wisconsin, Madison. Mary had a beautiful voice; she was able to sing in eight languages and had her Voyageur songs recorded. She was also a writer and poet. She was a member of the Wisconsin State historical Society and was named Honorary Folklorist for the state of Wisconsin. Mary was an archivist for the National federation of Music Clubs, and a member of the National Folklore Society. Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Joan Regan, Fondulac: three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Myrtle Schlimme, Milwaukee; Clarice Enger, Milwaukee; Norine Surprise, Oconto; Marjorie Smith, Milwaukee; one sister-in-law, Louise Barber, Oconto. Mary was further preceded in death by one son, Vincent Wittock; one sister, Sr. Mary Nora Barber, S.S.N.D., and four brothers; Lloyd, Henry, Bernard, and Franklin Barber. Relatives and friends called on Saturday from 11:00-12:00 at mach Funeral Chapel. Internment was at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha. Mary did more simply live life to the fullest; she was the embodiment of life and love itself, enjoying all that life had to offer and enriching the lives of those that knew her.
