Mr. Joseph L. Schoen, Jr., Oconto, passed away Monday evening, June 4, 2001 at home at the age of 89 after a long illness.

Mr. Schoen was born to Joseph and Laura (Steber) Schoen on March 13, 1912 in Milwaukee. During his lifetime, he worked as a mechanic and was self employed. He married the former Bernice Cahl-amer on May 29, 1943 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Milwaukee. They moved to Oconto in 1946, where he worked for Schneider Chevrolet until 1959. At that time he owned and operated Schoen Autobody as a mechanic and body man until retirement in 1972. Joe was an avid outdoor person, enjoying a big garden, swimming on his own beach, and camping with his family on weekends. He enjoyed his many trips to Texas to visit children and other relatives.

Surviving are his wife Bernice of 58 years; three sons Joseph (Ann), Amarillo, TX; Lawrence (Virginia) Peshtigo; and Rex, Amarillo, TX; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and William Jessen; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Evelyn Schoen; a sister-in-law, Shirley DeBaere, and a nephew, Jeffery DeBaere.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Park Avenue at Madison Street, Oconto, where Joseph was a member. Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church. The Rev. Fr. David C. Ruby officiating.

Joseph had donated his body to Medical Science. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established. Arrangements are under the care of Ackerman Funeral Directors, Oconto. Raymond B. Ackerman, Jr., Funeral Director.
