1st POSTMASTER PASSES FRIDAY

Death Claims John Holl, Sr., 78;

Had Been Ill for Past Three Years

After an illness of three years caused by infirmities due to old age, death claimed a pioneer reident of Hayes, John Holl Sr., 78, at his home Friday morning, Feb 28.(1936)

A requiem High Mass was held at 9:30 Monday morning at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suring with the Rev. Fr. George Weix officiating and burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in the Town of How.

Mike and Nick Ehlinger, Joseph Stengel, Joseph Philippi, Antone Otradovec and Antone Boerschinger carried the casket to its final resting place.

John Holl was born April 28, 1857 in the Town of Bellevue, Brown County (note: He is the son of Jacob Holl and Margaret Dollar Holl). He came to Hayes in the 1880 and had lived there up to the time of his death.(note: In actuality, John Holl had first homesteaded a farm in Town of How from 1880-1886)During his life he had been engaged in farming and in lumbering, conducting a sawmill for a time, and operating a general merchandise store. The store which he operated for over 40 years at Hayes is now in charge of his daughter, Anna.

Mr.Holl was one of the first Postmasters in Hayes before the postoffice was moved to Suring. He also served as town treasurer for a few years, assessor, highway superintendent and for the past 26 years was Justice of the Peace. (Note: also elected and served for many years on the local school board, helping to organize the original school system and build each of the schools, and was a Notary Public)

On April 28, 1885 he married Veronic Kurz in Shawano.

Mr. and Mrs. Holl had the pleasure of celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary Sunday April 28, 1935, this date also having been Mr. Holl's 78th birthday anniversary. Mrs. Holl is 70 years old and was born in Denmark, Wis., on March 29, 1865.

Survivors are the aged wife; four daughters, Anna, at home, Mrs. Margaret (Oliver) Renier of Green Bay, Mrs. Kate (Jack) Philippi of Town of How, Mrs. Elizabeth (Pete) Wagner of Green Valley; three sons, Joseph of the Town of How, John of Appleton, and Jacob of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Kitty (J. Edward) Kaye of Green Bay, and Mrs. Anna Whitter of Alberta, Canada; four brothers, Henry of Green Bay, Edward of Hintz, Jacob and Matt of the Town of How; 29 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

The out-of-town relatives at the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Renier and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kaye, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Holl and family, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dollar and sons, Mrs. John Josten, Mrs Omer Rothe, Jule Holl, Herbert Krammer, Fritz Renier, all of Green Bay; Mr. and Mrs Joseph Holl of Shawano, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Holl and daughter from Hintz, Mr and Mrs. Jacob Holl and son, Richard of Milwaukee, Mrs. Elizabeth Wagner, Green Valey and John Holl, Appleton.
