Died at home Tuesday

John Donovan died at his home in this city, Tuesday, Febuary 28, 1899. Had he lived one day longer he would have been 97 years old. He was born in Cork County Ireland, March 1, 1802 and came to this country when he was 28 years old. In Rochester, New York he married Miss Susan Smith now nearly 90 years old who survives him. After a brief residence in Rochester, where he worked at his trade, brycklaying, he moved to a little town in Pennsylvania and later to Bay de Nocque where he was employed by the Stephensons in the lumber woods and Mrs. Donovan in charge of the companies boarding house.

In 1856 they purchased a forty of land which has since been their home. For many years Mr. Donovan was employed in a responsible capacity in the Oconto Companies yards. During the last 30 years he had taken life more leisurely. Two years ago his eyesight became impaired but his bodily health was retained in a remarkable degree up until January last, since which time he had gradually declined until the end came. He was a member of St. Joseph Church. He never joined a secret society.

There are 8 children living. Mrs. Delores Driscoll of Iowa, Mrs. Charles West of Oklahoma, Mrs. Hugh McLaughlin of Iron Mountain, Mrs. Pat O'Neil of Hintz, Oconto County, Mrs. William Luck, Oconto, Mrs. E. Pulford, Oconto, Mrs. James Herald, Oconto, John R. Donovan, Oconto. They were all present at the funeral held from st. Joseph Catholic Church this morning with the exception of Mrs. Driscoll and Mrs. West. Miss Francis McLaughlin, Iron Mountain and William Taylor, Hickory and grandchildren were also here. There are 32 grandchildren and 15 great grand children. The pallbearers were Hugh Herald, D. O'Keefe, John Monaghan, James Donlevy, Charles Forestall, George Davis.
