John Layton BRYCE

Oconto County Reporter - Wed, Aug 11, 1999

John Layton Bryce, whose love for flying the American flag "caught on" in his Wauwatosa (WI) neighborhood, died of lung cancer July 20, 1999. A retired colonel in the US Air Force Reserves, he was 88.

Mr. Bryce, who lost his mother when he was six years old and his father when he was 12, graduated from Oconto High School and the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. He also earned a master's degree in psychology at Marquette University, said his wife, Julia.

He served in the Pacific Theater of World War II as a member of the US Air Corps.

After the service, when his work as a professional counselor took him from La Crosse to St. Norbert's, he joined the Air Force Reserves unit in Green Bay and was commander when he eft and moved to take a job in Milwaukee in 1951.

He was a counselor at the Veterans Administration in Milwaukee until he retired in 1968, said his daughter, Terry Brennan. A love for his work led him to take another job in his field, this time as a school psycologist for Milwaukee Public Schools where he retire again in 1977.

His moved to this area meant transferring his active membership in the reserves to the 440th in Milwaukee. He retired, having achieved the rank of colonel, in 1971.

Mr Bryce kept busy as a member of Stenz Griesell Smith American Legion Post 449 in Elm Grove. He also belonged to the St. Jude's Parish and was a former member of the Elks.

He was fascinated with wolves, the countryside and nature in general, and he loved cars, fishing, and palying golf. However, he will be most widely remembered, perhaps, for his role in his Wauwatosa neighborhood.

In addition to Julita, his wife of 56 years, and daughter Terry (John) Brennan of Wauwatosa, he is survivied by two other daughters, Tudy (Fran) Cook of Northfield, IL, and Toni M. Stutheit of Salem, OR; one son, Jack (Barbara) of Seattle; six grandchildren; one sister, Marie McWalter of Seattle; two brothers-in-law, Thomas (Fran) Garvey of Wauwatosa and Frank (Judy) Garvey of Peoria, IL; friends, the Hoeppner and Monthey families; other relatives and friends.

The Rev. Peter Carrick celebrated Mass at St Jude the Apostle Church. He was joined at the alter by Mrs. Bryce's nephew, The Rev. Michael Hoeppner. Entombment was in Wisconsin Memorial Park. Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home.
