The boys had left the camp at Three Lakes about four p.m. but encountered so much tire trouble that they did not reach Suring until midnight. Most of the boys were asleep when the truck crashed.
Howard Chilson of Oconto suffered a broken neck and he passed away at the Oconto Falls Hospital on Saturday evening about six o'clock. All that was humanly possible to save the young man, who was 21, was done but the injuries he received were too severe to permit recovery.
Byron Foster is still a patient of the hospital, his injuries including broken ribs, and a dislocated shoulder. Byron was unconscious until after 6 o'clock Saturday morning when he regained his senses and was informed he had figured in a accident. His condition is very satisfactory at this writing, we are happy to report.
Others injured were Gerald Schlosser of Lena, whose leg and hand were badly cut and bruised, and a severe shock was suffered by Vernon Schmidt of Gillett. It is miraculous that the remaining six lads suffered only a bad shaking up and slight bruises for according to reports the truck turned over twice. No doubt they were saved from injuries due to the fact that they were asleep and relaxed, and had no chance to tense their limbs for the impact. The injured were given first aid by Dr. Dougherty of Suring and then brought to the Falls Hospital for treatment.
